✨ Key Takeaways

Market Update at 04:00 PM: Indian benchmark equity indices, the Sensex and Nifty 50, staged a strong recovery from their Intraday lows on Monday, October 26, 2026, following a weak opening amid elevated crude oil prices, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and concerns over global monetary policy.

The Nifty 50 opened at 22,524.40, compared with its previous close of 22,600.00. The Sensex also opened under pressure, falling more than 290 points in early trading. Selling pressure initially dragged the Nifty 50 to an intraday low of 22,387.35, while the Sensex declined to 72,514.57. However, buying interest emerged at lower levels, helping both benchmark indices recover substantially during the session.

At the close, the Nifty 50 settled at 22,753.20, gaining 153.20 points, or 0.68 per cent. The Sensex closed 482.92 points, or 0.66 per cent, higher at 73,606.75, recovering more than 1,000 points from its intraday low. The recovery followed a difficult previous week, during which the Nifty 50 declined 2.36 per cent and ended lower for four consecutive trading sessions.

Crude oil prices remained a key factor influencing investor sentiment. Brent crude traded above USD 114 per barrel during the session amid concerns over potential disruptions to energy supplies from the Middle East. The developments added to inflation concerns and uncertainty surrounding global economic conditions. Despite these headwinds, domestic equities recovered from their early losses, indicating buying interest at lower market levels.

Geopolitical uncertainty also remained in focus, with attacks involving Yemen's Houthi group and Saudi Arabian targets renewing concerns over regional stability and potential disruptions to oil supplies. Brent crude had approached USD 117 per barrel before easing. Higher crude prices are a concern for India because the country relies heavily on imported oil, potentially increasing import costs and inflationary pressures.

Meanwhile, investors remained focused on the upcoming U.S. Federal Reserve policy decision. Expectations surrounding the future direction of U.S. interest rates continued to influence global equity markets, bond yields and emerging-market capital flows. Higher U.S. interest rates can make dollar-denominated assets more attractive, potentially affecting foreign investment flows into emerging markets, including India.

The broader market also recovered following the selling pressure witnessed during the previous week. The Nifty Midcap 100 index gained approximately 1.19 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 250 index advanced around 1.38 per cent, indicating a broader recovery across market segments.

Sectoral performance was mixed, although several indices recovered from their morning lows. The Nifty Metal index emerged among the leading performers, gaining approximately 1.89 per cent, followed by the Nifty Pharma index, which rose around 1.54 per cent. The Nifty Energy index advanced approximately 1.13 per cent, while the Nifty IT index gained around 0.72 per cent. In contrast, the Nifty Media index declined approximately 0.49 per cent, extending its losing streak to six consecutive trading sessions.

Among individual stocks, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories attracted buying interest following its quarterly earnings announcement. The stock gained nearly 6.62 per cent during the session, emerging as one of the leading performers in the Nifty 50. Shriram Finance declined approximately 4.62 per cent in early trading after the company revised its loan-growth outlook, drawing attention to its future lending performance. Kotak Mahindra Bank gained approximately 2.38 per cent during early trading following its quarterly financial results.

Bharti Airtel, Reliance Industries and Kotak Mahindra Bank were among the key contributors to the Nifty 50's gains, adding 17.33 points, 17.27 points and 16.55 points, respectively. On the other hand, HDFC Bank, Shriram Finance and Bajaj Finance weighed on the index, dragging it down by 15.94 points, 12.25 points and 6.09 points, respectively.

Market breadth remained positive on Monday, October 26, 2026, with advancing stocks outnumbering declining stocks. Of the 3,681 stocks traded, 2,063 advanced, 1,525 declined and 93 remained unchanged. However, the number of stocks touching their 52-week lows remained elevated at 443, compared with just 20 stocks hitting 52-week highs. Additionally, 180 stocks touched their Lower Circuit limits, while 91 stocks hit their Upper Circuit limits during the session.

The recovery in benchmark indices and broader markets reflected buying interest after recent losses. However, elevated crude oil prices, geopolitical developments and the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy decision remained important factors for investors to monitor.

The cautious opening indication follows a weak close for Indian benchmarks on Friday, while U.S. markets also ended lower. Investors are likely to track Q2 FY27 earnings, crude oil prices amid West Asia tensions and the U.S. Federal Reserve meeting scheduled for October 27-28.

The September-quarter earnings calendar remains a key domestic driver, with Tata Consumer Products, ITC Hotels, Paytm, Aavas Financiers, Aegis Logistics, Ather Energy, Mankind Pharma, REC and Sona BLW Precision Forgings among the companies scheduled to announce results on October 26. Corporate commentary on demand, margins and business outlook could influence stock-specific movements across FMCG, financials, consumer internet, energy and automobile sectors.

West Asia tensions and energy-supply concerns remain important for domestic markets, particularly because India is a major crude oil importer. Sustained high oil prices can increase the import bill, add to inflation risks, pressure the rupee and raise input costs for companies. Oil marketing companies, airlines, paints, chemicals, logistics and other energy-intensive businesses could remain in focus, while upstream oil producers may also attract attention.

The U.S. Federal Reserve's policy meeting on October 27-28 will be closely watched for its assesSMEnt of interest rates, inflation and liquidity conditions. The policy decision and accompanying commentary could influence U.S. Treasury yields, the dollar and foreign-investor flows towards emerging markets. Rate-sensitive sectors, including banks, NBFCs, IT, metals and stocks with significant foreign portfolio investor ownership, may remain on the radar ahead of the meeting.

India's September industrial-production data is scheduled for release on October 28. The data will provide an updated assessment of manufacturing and industrial activity, with implications for capital goods, infrastructure, cement, metals and other cyclical sectors. Jio Platforms is also scheduled to list on stock exchanges on October 28. The proposed debut is among the week's major primary-market events and may draw attention towards Reliance-group stocks, telecom companies and digital-platform valuations.

U.S. equities closed lower in the previous session, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average declining 1.23 per cent to 52,215.16. The S&P 500 fell 0.52 per cent to 7,623.68, while the Nasdaq slipped 0.21 per cent to 25,955.34.

Despite the latest decline, elevated crude prices remain relevant for India's macroeconomic outlook because of the country's dependence on oil imports. Further price movements and developments in West Asia could influence inflation expectations, the rupee and input-cost-sensitive sectors.

Gold was trading at USD 3,988.94, down 0.16 per cent, while silver was largely unchanged at USD 53.84, up 0.02 per cent. The Dollar Index eased 0.19 per cent to 101.61. The rupee was trading around Rs 94.93 per U.S. dollar. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield declined by 0.027 percentage points to 4.974 per cent, a level that remains relevant for global risk appetite and equity valuations.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers of Indian equities worth Rs 887.65 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) recorded net purchases of Rs 3,235.36 crore.
