On Dalal Street, the bulls continued to be in control as the market posted gains for the seventh straight day on Wednesday. The benchmarks closed the day up by more than 5 per cent due to factors like reducing inflation, buying by FIIs, and optimistic market signals from around the world. PSU banks observed widespread purchasing. Besides, investors eagerly anticipated the release of the US FOMC meeting minutes later today.  

S&P BSE Sensex, the barometer index, gained 417 points to 60,260.13. Nifty 50 index rose by mere 119 points and closed at 17,944.25 levels. On the broader market, S&P BSE Smallcap index jumped 148 points and ended at 28,343 levels. While S&P BSE Midcap index scaled up by 161 points to the level of 25,182 levels. The top gaining stocks on Sensex were Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, Bharti Airtel, Tech Mahindra, and HCL Technologies.  

The market breadth was strong as 2,017 shares increased and 1,405 shares decreased on BSE. Almost 134 shares were unchanged overall. In the foreign exchange market, the rupee was lower against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 79.4350, compared with its close of 79.7450 during the previous trading session.
