Emcure Expands Poviztra® for MASH Treatment

Emcure Pharmaceuticals announced that Poviztra®, its co-marketed brand of innovator semaglutide (rDNA origin), will now be available for the treatment of non-cirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis (F2-F3), following the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) approval of Wegovy® for the indication.

According to the company, the approval makes Novo Nordisk's innovator molecule the first and only GLP-1 receptor agonist approved in India for the treatment of MASH. Poviztra® is manufactured and imported from Novo Nordisk's European manufacturing facility, enabling Emcure to expand access to innovator semaglutide for patients suffering from this progressive liver disease.

Addresses a Significant Unmet Medical Need

MASH is a progressive liver disease caused by excess fat accumulation in the liver, leading to chronic inflammation, fibrosis and liver damage. The disease is closely associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes and other metabolic disorders and often remains undiagnosed until advanced stages.

The approval is supported by findings from the global Phase III ESSENCE trial, in which semaglutide achieved resolution of steatohepatitis in 63 per cent of patients and improved liver fibrosis in 37 per cent of patients. Additionally, one in three patients achieved both resolution of steatohepatitis and improvement in liver fibrosis, highlighting the therapy's potential to address the underlying disease.

Management Commentary

Commenting on the development, Satish Mehta, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Emcure Pharmaceuticals Limited, said: "The approval for MASH marks an important milestone for patients living with a serious and often underdiagnosed liver disease. We are pleased to make this important new indication available through Poviztra®, further strengthening our commitment to bringing globally validated, innovative therapies to patients in India. We look forward to working closely with healthcare professionals to improve awareness, encourage earlier diagnosis and expand access to evidence-based treatment for people living with MASH."

Strengthening the Metabolic Care Portfolio

The company stated that Poviztra® has already established its presence in chronic weight management for people living with obesity and overweight individuals with co-morbid conditions such as hypertension, dyslipidaemia and type 2 diabetes. The therapy is also approved for obese patients with established cardiovascular disease and for the management of adolescent obesity in patients aged 12 years and above.

The addition of the MASH indication further strengthens Emcure's strategy of addressing complex metabolic diseases through innovative, science-led therapies while supporting improved long-term patient outcomes.
