IndiGo To Suspend Manchester Flights From August 31 Amid Rising Costs
IndiGo will suspend its India–Manchester services from August 31, 2026, and return one leased Boeing 787-9, citing prolonged airspace constraints and sharply higher operating costs.
✨ Key Takeaways
On Wednesday, Indian equity benchmarks traded lower, with the benchmark Nifty 50 index declining 0.89 per cent to 23,275.55. Amid the broader market weakness, InterGlobe Aviation (Indigo) share price traded at Rs 4,449.20, down 0.66 per cent from the previous close. The stock remained in focus after the airline announced that it will temporarily suspend flight operations to and from Manchester from August 31, 2026.
IndiGo To Pause Manchester Operations
IndiGo said it will temporarily discontinue its Manchester route with effect from August 31, 2026, due to continuing international airspace constraints and an increasingly challenging cost environment.
As part of the decision, the airline will return one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft that it had taken on damp or wet lease from Norse Atlantic Airways. The carrier clarified that all its remaining long-haul services will continue to operate as scheduled.
IndiGo Airspace Constraints And Higher Costs Impact Operations
According to the airline, ongoing international airspace restrictions have significantly increased flight durations, resulting in higher operating costs than initially anticipated.
IndiGo stated that the aviation industry continues to face multiple challenges, including geopolitical developments in the Middle East, elevated aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, severe airspace constraints, and foreign exchange volatility. The company said these factors collectively created a cost structure that necessitated a reassessment of select long-haul operations.
IndiGo Part Of Long-Haul Expansion Strategy
The airline had inducted six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft from Norse Atlantic Airways in early 2025 as part of its strategy to expand into long-haul international markets.
The leased aircraft were intended to help establish IndiGo's presence on key international routes ahead of the induction of its own Airbus A350 fleet. Manchester was identified as one of the strategic destinations under this expansion plan.
Despite the suspension, IndiGo said customer demand on the route has been encouraging and the decision should not be viewed as a withdrawal from its long-term international growth ambitions.
Management Commentary
Abhijit Dasgupta, Senior Vice President, said "Network Planning & Revenue Management at IndiGo, said the airline had introduced the wide-body aircraft on a short-term basis to accelerate connectivity to high-potential long-haul destinations, including Manchester.
He stated that longer flying times arising from airspace constraints, combined with sharply rising operating costs, led to the decision to temporarily discontinue the route. Dasgupta added that the airline remains committed to its long-haul strategy and intends to resume Manchester services when operating conditions become commercially viable. He also noted that IndiGo is exploring ways to continue its collaboration with Norse Atlantic Airways".
Customer Support Measures
The airline said affected passengers will be informed well in advance of the suspension. Customers will be offered available alternatives, including rebooking options or refunds, wherever applicable.
