One of India's Largest Defence Companies Signs Final Contract with Safran for Aravalli Helicopter Engine; New Engine to Power IMRH and Naval Variant

On Wednesday, Indian equity benchmark indices traded lower, with the benchmark Nifty 50 index falling 24.55 points, or 0.10 per cent, to 24,310.00. Meanwhile, the Nifty India Defence index rose 6.50 points, or 0.07 per cent, to 9,769.85, while Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) traded at Rs 4,900.10.

HAL and Safran Sign Final Contract

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Safran Helicopter Engines have signed a contract with SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd. (SAFHAL) for the development and production of a new-generation high-power helicopter engine named “Aravalli.” The contract covers the engine's design, development, manufacture, supply and lifecycle support.

The Aravalli engine will operate in the 3,500 to 4,000 shp power class and has been selected to power HAL's upcoming 13-ton Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) as well as its naval variant, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH).

Focus on Indigenous Aero-Engine Capability

The company said the Aravalli programme represents a significant step towards greater self-Reliance in critical Aerospace propulsion technologies and strengthening indigenous capabilities for future-generation rotorcraft programmes.

According to HAL, the programme is intended to contribute to the development of a stronger domestic aerospace industrial ecosystem while supporting the operational requirements of the IMRH and DBMRH.

Ravi K, Chairman and Managing Director, HAL, said the signing of the contract marks a significant step in India's pursuit of self-reliance in aero-engine technologies. He added that the collaboration with SAFHAL and Safran Helicopter Engines will create a foundation for powering next-generation Indian helicopter platforms and contribute to the development of a robust domestic aerospace industrial ecosystem.

Cédric Goubet, CEO, Safran Helicopter Engines, said the programme builds on the companies' long-standing partnership and combines their expertise to develop propulsion systems for future Indian rotorcraft. He also highlighted that this is the first time Safran Helicopter Engines has undertaken co-development of an engine in this class.

SAFHAL to Develop Advanced Propulsion Technologies

SAFHAL is a joint venture between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Safran Helicopter Engines SAS. The joint venture will combine the capabilities of both parent companies to develop advanced propulsion technologies.

The collaboration will cover advanced design methodologies, manufacturing processes, comprehensive testing and product support, with the programme aligned with international aerospace standards.

Potential Beyond Defence Applications

The Aravalli engine programme could also have potential applications beyond military platforms. According to the company, future civil-market opportunities could include offshore transportation, utility missions and VVIP transport.

The programme is also expected to support the development of indigenous Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) capabilities in India.

Long-Standing HAL-Safran Partnership

HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines have a long history of cooperation. Safran's Artouste engines have powered the Cheetah and Chetak helicopters, while the Shakti engine family powers platforms including the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) and Light Utility Helicopter (LUH).

The Aravalli programme takes this partnership into a new phase through the joint design and development of a turboshaft engine tailored for medium-lift rotorcraft platforms in India and global markets.
