Oil prices extended their decline after Iran and Oman moved towards cooperation to facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Pre-Market Update at 7:40 AM: Indian equities are likely to begin Wednesday, August 26, 2026, on a positive note, with GIFT Nifty indicating a firm start. GIFT Nifty was trading around 24,557 in early trade, pointing to continued positive momentum on Dalal Street.
The positive opening follows Tuesday's sharp recovery, when the Nifty 50 bounced back from an Intraday low of 24,115.45 to close at 24,334.55, up 115.50 points, or 0.48 per cent. The Sensex gained 286.99 points, or 0.37 per cent, to settle at 77,656.09. Buying in beaten-down Large-Cap stocks, lower crude oil prices, improved global cues and renewed foreign institutional buying supported the recovery.
U.S. markets ended higher on Tuesday as technology stocks recovered from their recent weakness and bond yields eased. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.30 per cent to close at 53,577.40, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.32 per cent to 7,677.28. The Nasdaq Composite outperformed, rising 0.66 per cent to settle at 26,151.30.
Technology and Semiconductor stocks led the gains ahead of Nvidia's closely watched earnings announcement. However, Nasdaq 100 futures were down about 0.4 per cent in Asian trading on Wednesday, reflecting some caution before the results and key U.S. inflation data. S&P 500 futures also slipped around 0.2 per cent.
Asian markets opened with a positive bias. Japan's Topix rose 0.3 per cent, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.3 per cent and Hang Seng futures were up 0.4 per cent. Asian shares were broadly supported by the overnight recovery in U.S. technology stocks, although investors remained cautious ahead of inflation data and central bank commentary.
European equities had also closed higher in the previous session, aided by easing bond yields and softer energy prices.
Crude oil prices remained under pressure, providing relief to global and domestic equity markets. Oil prices fell about 1 per cent on Wednesday, extending the previous session's decline, amid fresh hopes that the Strait of Hormuz could reopen after Iran resumed discussions with Oman regarding management of the strategic waterway.
Brent crude had fallen about 1 per cent to around USD 85 per barrel in the session, marking its lowest level in around a week. WTI crude remained near USD 81.86 per barrel. Softer crude prices are positive for India's inflation outlook and could support sectors such as aviation, paints and chemicals by reducing input costs.
Gold remained largely steady in early Asian trade as investors awaited key U.S. inflation data for further signals on the Federal Reserve's interest rate outlook. Spot gold was hovering near USD 4,654 per ounce, while gold futures were around USD 4,711 per ounce.
The Dollar Index remained relatively stable after recent volatility, while the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield eased towards 4.66 per cent. Lower bond yields could support risk appetite and emerging market capital flows.
Foreign institutional investors turned net buyers in the cash market on Tuesday, purchasing shares worth Rs 1,593.53 crore. Domestic institutional investors were also net buyers, with purchases of Rs 230.26 crore.
The Indian rupee pared its initial losses and settled 24 paise higher at 95.46 against the U.S. dollar, supported by positive domestic equities, a weaker greenback and falling crude oil prices.
India VIX declined 3.9 per cent to settle at 11.08, indicating a moderation in market volatility. Tuesday's session, however, witnessed increased volatility during the final trading hour as the market went through the first monthly expiry under the newly introduced closing auction system.
There are no stocks in the F&O ban for Wednesday.
From a technical perspective, the Nifty 50 has immediate support around 24,240, followed by 24,200 and 24,100. On the upside, the index could face resistance in the 24,400-24,500 zone, with 24,480 emerging as an important near-term level.
The RSI has entered a bullish crossover, indicating an improvement in short-term momentum. Bank Nifty will also remain crucial, with investors tracking institutional flows and broader market sentiment.
Reliance Industries will remain on investors' radar after participating in Tuesday's broader market recovery. Groww is also likely to stay in focus amid continued market activity in the recently listed financial services counter. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Cipla are among other stocks expected to attract attention on Wednesday due to sector-specific developments and market activity.
Waterways Leisure Tourism will also be in focus as August 26 is the record date for its 1:10 Stock Split.
Information technology stocks could remain active after the Nasdaq's outperformance, although Nvidia's earnings and the subsequent reaction in global technology stocks will be closely tracked. Oil-consuming sectors, including aviation, paints and chemicals, may benefit if crude prices continue to soften.
Banking and financial stocks will remain sensitive to foreign fund flows and overall market momentum following the return of FIIs as net buyers.
The domestic market will primarily track GIFT Nifty, crude oil prices, developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, institutional flows, U.S. inflation indicators and Nvidia's earnings. While easing crude prices and improving global sentiment have strengthened the near-term outlook, geopolitical developments and inflation concerns could continue to drive volatility.
Indian equity markets will remain open for trading on August 26, despite Eid-e-Milad, according to the exchange holiday schedule.
