Reliance Industries Explores Aluminium Entry Through Andhra Pradesh Coal Gasification Plan

Reliance Industries is exploring an aluminium venture linked to its Andhra Pradesh coal gasification project, targeting long-term growth in India's expanding metals sector.

Key Takeaways

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), led by Mukesh Ambani, is evaluating an entry into the aluminium business as part of its broader strategy to develop new industrial businesses. The potential venture is linked to its planned coal gasification project in Andhra Pradesh, with aluminium production being considered as a way to improve the commercial utilisation of the fuel generated through gasification.

RIL acquired two coal blocks through government auctions and is planning an underground coal gasification project in Andhra Pradesh. Coal gasification converts coal into combustible gas that can be used for power generation and as an industrial fuel. The company is exploring whether the gas generated from the project can be used efficiently in aluminium production.

As part of the potential aluminium strategy, RIL is also interested in the Karlapat bauxite block in Odisha, which could provide access to a key raw material required for aluminium production. The company had earlier proposed an investment of Rs 2.73 lakh crore over 30 years to develop an integrated underground coal gasification complex in Andhra Pradesh. The project is expected to be developed in phases, beginning with exploration and pilot testing to assess its commercial viability.

Strong Aluminium Demand Creates Opportunity

India's aluminium consumption is expected to rise significantly, supported by infrastructure development, electrification, renewable energy, electric vehicles and growing manufacturing activity. Domestic aluminium consumption could increase from around 6 million tonnes in FY26 to nearly 8.5 million tonnes by FY30 and potentially reach around 28 million tonnes by FY47.

The expected increase in demand could create opportunities for additional capacity, particularly if announced projects are insufficient to meet long-term consumption requirements. India's aluminium industry is currently led by major producers such as Vedanta Aluminium, Hindalco Industries and National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO). RIL's potential entry could add another large corporate player to the sector.

RIL Focuses on Industrial Diversification

The potential aluminium venture is consistent with RIL's strategy of expanding beyond its traditional businesses. The company has built significant operations across telecom, retail, energy and digital services, and is increasingly focusing on integrated industrial opportunities.

An aluminium business could potentially combine RIL's access to coal resources, gasification technology and energy infrastructure with metal production. It could also provide an additional avenue for utilising the output from its proposed coal gasification project while gaining exposure to a sector with strong long-term industrial demand.

Outlook

RIL's potential move into aluminium highlights the growing strategic importance of metals amid India's infrastructure, electrification and manufacturing expansion. However, the aluminium proposal remains at an evaluation stage. If pursued successfully, integrating coal resources, gasification and aluminium production could become a significant new industrial venture for RIL.
