Pre-Market Update at 7:40 AM: Indian equity markets are likely to open cautiously on Thursday, October 22, following a volatile previous session in which the Nifty 50 surrendered its early gains and closed below 22,900. Elevated crude oil prices, concerns over further monetary tightening by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and developments in India-U.S. trade negotiations remain important factors for domestic equities. Global cues are mixed, with Wall Street advancing overnight on technology stocks and corporate earnings, while GIFT Nifty indicates a weaker opening.

GIFT Nifty was quoted at 22,679.50 at 6:59 AM IST on October 22, placing it 131.85 points, or 0.58 per cent, below Wednesday's Nifty 50 closing level of 22,811.35. The reading indicates a possible gap-down opening. However, this specific early-morning quotation could not be independently verified against an exchange-timestamped feed. Other accessible feeds displayed differing observations, making fresh confirmation necessary before publication. Thursday's pre-market reporting broadly supports the weak-opening indication.

Exact current-session levels for these indices and South Korea's Kospi could not be confirmed from sufficiently recent, timestamped quotations.

Brent crude traded above USD 110 per barrel during Wednesday's session amid continuing U.S.-Iran tensions and concerns over Middle Eastern oil supplies. Elevated crude prices increase India's import costs and can pressure aviation, paints and oil marketing companies when higher input costs cannot be fully passed on.

Early Thursday indications placed Brent crude near USD 110.16 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) near USD 99.76 per barrel. Gold was indicated near USD 4,117.45 per troy ounce and silver near USD 57.36. The U.S. Dollar Index was reported near 101.71, while the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stood around 5.109 per cent. Iron ore production increased 18.4 per cent, electricity output rose 11.4 per cent and coal production advanced 10.7 per cent. The stronger growth could support sentiment towards industrial and infrastructure-linked businesses.

Developments in India-U.S. trade negotiations also remain in focus. Reports suggest Washington may consider more favourable tariff treatment for India than for competing Asian exporters. However, no revised tariff agreement has been announced.

Meanwhile, continued Middle East tensions and elevated crude oil prices remain potential cost pressures for aviation, paints, chemicals and fuel retailers. These developments could influence inflation expectations and market sentiment during Thursday's session.
