Investment View and Valuation

Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd (MOFSL), in its July 18, 2026 report, characterises Axis Bank’s 1QFY27 as a weak quarter operationally despite an earnings beat. The broker retains its Neutral rating and a target price of Rs 1,500, valuing the bank at 1.7x FY28E adjusted book value. The target implied 13% upside from the report’s CMP of Rs 1,329.

MOFSL reduced its FY27E and FY28E earnings estimates by about 2% each, principally reflecting lower net interest income and margins. The broker forecasts FY28E return on assets of 1.6% and return on equity of 15.3%.

1QFY27 Financial Performance

Axis Bank reported standalone net profit of Rs 71.1 billion in 1QFY27, up 22.5% year on year and broadly flat sequentially. Profit was 7% above MOFSL’s estimate because operating expenses and provisions were lower than expected. However, the quality of the beat was affected by a one-off operating-expense reversal.

Metric 1QFY27 Year-on-year change Sequential change Versus MOFSL estimate
Standalone net profit Rs 71.1 billion +22.5% Broadly flat +7%
Net interest income Rs 146.5 billion +8% +1.3% 2% below estimate
Pre-provision operating profit Rs 116.6 billion +1% +16% —
Net interest margin 3.46% — -16 bps Versus 3.57% estimate
Operating expenses — +4.5% -7.1% 7% below estimate

A Rs 1.29 billion provident-fund charge recognised earlier was reversed during the quarter following easing government-security yields. Operating expenses therefore fell sequentially despite rising year on year. Pre-provision operating profit rose to Rs 116.6 billion, while the cost-to-income ratio declined to 45.5%.

Margin Pressure and Retail Disbursements

Net interest income increased 8% year on year and 1.3% quarter on quarter to Rs 146.5 billion, but was 2% below MOFSL’s estimate. Net interest margin contracted sharply by 16 basis points sequentially to 3.46%, compared with MOFSL’s estimate of 3.57%.

Management attributed the margin contraction to a 3-basis-point effect from interest-income reversals, 4 basis points from balance-sheet mix changes and 9 basis points from loan repricing. Management nevertheless retained its through-cycle NIM aspiration of about 3.8%, supported by an improving balance-sheet mix and stronger retail disbursements.

Retail disbursements rose 18% year on year, including 24% growth in home loans, 21% growth in vehicle finance, 16% growth in retail agriculture and 23% growth in personal loans.

Healthy Business Growth Led by Corporate Lending

Business growth remained healthy but was led by corporate lending. The loan book grew 19% year on year and 2.3% quarter on quarter. Corporate loans increased 5.2% sequentially, with their share of the loan mix rising to 34.4% from 29.8% in 1QFY26.

Retail loans were broadly flat sequentially, while SME loans grew 25% year on year and 3% sequentially. Deposits rose 18% year on year and 3% sequentially, driven by term deposits, which increased 23% year on year and 5.5% quarter on quarter. CASA deposits declined 1.4% sequentially, reducing the CASA ratio to 38%. The credit-deposit ratio remained broadly stable at 91.9%.

Management reiterated its medium-term objective to grow advances about 300 basis points faster than the industry.

Asset Quality and Provision Buffer

Asset quality weakened modestly due to seasonal agricultural slippages. Fresh slippages rose 19% sequentially to Rs 55.7 billion, although they declined 32% year on year. Net slippages stood at Rs 10.4 billion.

Asset-quality metric 1QFY27 Sequential change
Fresh slippages Rs 55.7 billion +19%
Net slippages Rs 10.4 billion —
Gross NPA ratio 1.28% +5 bps
Net NPA ratio 0.39% +2 bps
Provision coverage ratio 69.7% -54 bps
Provisions Rs 22.2 billion -37%

Provisions declined 44% year on year and 37% sequentially to Rs 22.2 billion. Axis Bank retains a cumulative provision buffer of Rs 156 billion, equal to 1.2% of loans, comprising standard-asset and additional non-NPA provisions.

Management expects only a marginal impact on net worth from the FY28 transition to the expected-credit-loss framework, although initial-year flow provisions could be relatively higher.

Key Factors Behind the Neutral View

  • Material net interest margin miss in 1QFY27.
  • Subdued retail loan growth.
  • Term-deposit-led funding mix and a decline in the CASA ratio.
  • Slight deterioration in asset quality due to seasonal agricultural slippages.

Potential Supports to the Thesis

  • Delivery of the 3.8% through-cycle NIM aspiration.
  • Improvement in the retail-led balance-sheet mix.
  • Advances growing faster than the industry.
  • The existing provision buffer of Rs 156 billion.
