Motilal Oswal Financial Services retained its Buy rating on Grasim Industries and maintained its sum-of-the-parts target price of Rs 3,440 in its May 20, 2026 results update. The broker views Grasim as a multi-engine growth story, supported by execution in paints and B2B e-commerce, margin expansion in viscose staple fibre (VSF), and volume growth in chemicals.
Grasim's standalone 4QFY26 operating performance exceeded Motilal Oswal's expectations across key segments. Revenue increased 32 per cent year on year to Rs 11,770 crore, 14 per cent above the estimate, while EBITDA rose 2.5 times year on year to Rs 540 crore, 22 per cent above the estimate. Operating margin expanded 2.1 percentage points year on year to 4.6 per cent, compared with the broker's estimate of 4.3 per cent. Adjusted loss narrowed to Rs 120 crore from Rs 210 crore in 4QFY25 and was lower than the estimated loss of Rs 160 crore.

The paint business remains central to the investment thesis. Birla Opus revenue increased about 52 per cent year on year in 4QFY26 on a like-for-like basis and doubled in FY26, compared with single-digit industry growth. Management stated that Birla Opus's revenue market share increased by 3.7 percentage points year on year and exceeded 10 per cent in March 2026. By management's internal estimates, Birla Opus became the third-largest organised decorative paint player.
Distribution reached more than 50,000 dealers in 11,500 towns through 146 depots, with a target of exceeding 15,000 towns in FY27. Dealers associated with Birla Opus for more than 18 months are generating a 25-50 per cent outlet share, with throughput comparable to incumbents. The portfolio included more than 218 products and 1,850 SKUs after 42 launches in FY26, while premium products contributed around 65 per cent of revenue.
Management expects paint losses to reduce as operating leverage builds and has reiterated its target of a profitable Rs 10,000 crore paint revenue franchise by FY28. Margin improvement is expected from the absorption of largely fixed sales-network and brand investments, procurement efficiencies, supplier negotiations, multi-sourcing, and power and logistics optimisation across six plants.
The key near-term concern is elevated crude-linked raw-material costs and currency depreciation. Management said these factors had increased input costs by as much as 20-25 per cent of cost of goods sold. Grasim implemented price increases of about 2-6 per cent earlier in the year and further increases in April 2026. Demand remained resilient, although management continues to monitor sales elasticity.
B2B e-commerce revenue grew 2.3 times year on year to Rs 2,850 crore in 4QFY26, while FY26 revenue was near the guidance of Rs 8,500 crore. Birla Pivot served more than 5,000 pin codes and 400 cities through over 5,000 retail touchpoints.
Management cited improvement in active buyers, transaction values and volumes. The platform is expanding its categories and geographic reach while adding embedded financial solutions, with the aim of becoming a one-stop building-materials procurement destination.
In VSF, 4QFY26 sales volume and realisation rose about 11 per cent and 2 per cent year on year, respectively. EBITDA doubled year on year to Rs 590 crore, with margin expanding 5.5 percentage points to around 13 per cent. EBITDA per kg reached Rs 24.
Management attributed the improved profitability to operating efficiencies, favourable mix and benign pulp prices. The 55,000 tonne-per-annum Phase I Lyocell expansion is progressing.
Chemicals recorded about 11 per cent volume growth, while realisation declined around 4 per cent. The segment margin fell 50 basis points year on year to about 12 per cent. Caustic soda sales volumes reached a record 321 kilotonnes in 4QFY26 and 1,232 kilotonnes in FY26.
For FY26, standalone revenue was Rs 41,040 crore, EBITDA was Rs 1,770 crore and adjusted profit after tax was Rs 420 crore. Operating margin increased 70 basis points to 4.3 per cent.
Motilal Oswal raised its FY27 earnings per share estimate by 2.6 times, driven by expected pre-tax dividend income of about Rs 4,000 crore from UltraTech Cement. The broker maintained its FY28 estimates.
| FY26 standalone metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Revenue | Rs 41,040 crore |
| EBITDA | Rs 1,770 crore |
| Adjusted profit after tax | Rs 420 crore |
| Operating margin | 4.3%, up 70 basis points year on year |
Motilal Oswal's Rs 3,440 target price is based on a sum-of-the-parts valuation. The methodology applies a 35 per cent holding-company discount to listed subsidiary holdings, 6 times FY28E EV/EBITDA to the standalone business excluding paints, 2 times invested capital to paints, 1.5 times FY28E revenue to B2B e-commerce, and 10 times EV/EBITDA to renewable energy.
| Business or holding | Valuation approach |
|---|---|
| Listed subsidiary holdings | 35% holding-company discount |
| Standalone business excluding paints | 6x FY28E EV/EBITDA |
| Paints | 2x invested capital |
| B2B e-commerce | 1.5x FY28E revenue |
| Renewable energy | 10x EV/EBITDA |
