In its July 16, 2026 Q1 FY27 result update, PL Research retained its BUY rating on HDFC Life Insurance Company. The thesis is based on an anticipated recovery in banca growth, sustained momentum in protection, non-par savings and annuity products, and continued agency expansion.
PL expects annualised premium equivalent (APE) growth of 12 per cent in FY27E and 14 per cent in FY28E, while expecting value of new business (VNB) margins to remain broadly range-bound. The target price was raised to Rs 765 from Rs 755.
HDFC Life reported Q1 FY27 APE of Rs 35,150 million, up 9 per cent year on year and 1.6 per cent below PL’s estimate of Rs 35,706 million. Growth was led by ULIP, non-par savings and protection, which increased 22 per cent, 22 per cent and 16 per cent year on year respectively. Participating business declined 52 per cent year on year on a high base.
Retail protection grew 42 per cent, supported by GST relief, while Credit Protect grew approximately 20 per cent on a recovery in microfinance institution disbursals.
| Business segment | Share of Q1 FY27 APE | Year-on-year growth |
|---|---|---|
| ULIP | 37 per cent | 22 per cent |
| Participating | 12 per cent | Down 52 per cent |
| Non-par | 19 per cent | 22 per cent |
| Protection | 16 per cent | 16 per cent |
| Annuity | 10 per cent | Not specified |
| Group | 5 per cent | Not specified |
Q1 FY27 VNB increased 9 per cent year on year to Rs 8,790 million, which was 4.8 per cent above PL’s estimate. The VNB margin was 25.0 per cent, broadly flat compared with 25.1 per cent in Q1 FY26 and above PL’s estimate of 23.5 per cent.
Management aims to deliver VNB growth broadly in line with APE growth, but expects limited margin expansion while prioritising growth investments. Management indicated that the loss of input tax credit had an approximately 60 basis point impact on the Q1 FY27 margin and expects to absorb the remaining approximately 60 basis point impact by H1 FY27.
PL forecasts VNB margins of 24.5 per cent in FY27E and 24.8 per cent in FY28E. The estimates are supported by a recovery in non-par volumes, continued protection momentum, and a higher contribution from rider-led ULIP and annuity products.
Distribution trends remain central to the outlook. Banca, agency, direct, and brokers and others contributed 57 per cent, 18 per cent, 10 per cent and 15 per cent respectively to individual APE in Q1 FY27.
Banca growth was only 2 per cent year on year because of lower HDFC Bank channel volumes, although counter-share improved at other bank partners. Management expects the HDFC Bank channel to contribute to growth in FY27 as competitive intensity moderates.
Agency APE grew 20 per cent, aided by distribution-footprint expansion and productivity initiatives. Branches opened over the preceding 24 months contributed approximately 16 per cent of agency APE. The expense of management ratio increased to 22.6 per cent from 21.9 per cent a year earlier, and PL expects operating expenditure to remain elevated in the near term because of Project Inspire investments.
Capital and operating indicators remained supportive. Embedded value grew 13 per cent year on year to Rs 658.6 billion, while AUM increased 13 per cent to Rs 4,008 billion. The solvency ratio improved to 185 per cent following a Rs 10 billion preferential allotment to HDFC Bank.
Rolling 12-month operating return on embedded value was 14.7 per cent. Persistency at the 13th, 25th, 37th, 49th and 61st months was 84 per cent, 76 per cent, 75 per cent, 70 per cent and 65 per cent respectively.
PL raised its FY27E and FY28E APE and VNB estimates by 1.2 per cent and 2.0 per cent respectively, while retaining its VNB-margin estimates.
The target price of Rs 765 uses an appraisal value framework. FY28E VNB of Rs 50,916 million, valued at an 18.3 times multiple, gives a structural value of Rs 930,702 million. This is added to FY27E embedded value of Rs 719,673 million.
The resulting appraisal value of Rs 1,650,375 million implies Rs 765 per share and 2.0 times FY28E price-to-embedded-value.
