Investment View and Valuation

In its June 09, 2026 company update following InterGlobe Aviation's CY26 Analyst Day, Emkay Global Financial Services retained its BUY recommendation and Rs 5,200 target price. Emkay believes the airline's industry-leading cost structure, operational execution and extensive network reinforce its market leadership despite a volatile near-term operating environment.

The broker reduced its FY27E ARPU growth assumption to 6 per cent from 8 per cent, but raised its yield assumption. Consequently, earnings estimates and the target price remain unchanged. The target price is based on a 20 times target price-to-earnings multiple applied to FY28E standalone EPS of Rs 260.

Long-Term Aviation Opportunity and Expansion Targets

Management reiterated a favourable long-term Indian aviation opportunity, supported by economic growth, demographics and low penetration. Passenger traffic in India is projected by management to double to 246 million by FY35.

For FY30, InterGlobe Aviation is targeting approximately 300 billion available seat kilometres, more than 550 aircraft, approximately 200 million passengers and over 3,000 daily departures. Capacity growth, measured by ASK, is expected to be in the mid-teens compound annual growth range during FY28E-FY30E, supported by fleet induction, network expansion and international operations. Around 40 per cent of capacity is targeted to come from international operations over the longer term.

FY27 Operating Outlook

FY27 is expected to be a yield-led rather than volume-led year. Management guided to broad single-digit year-on-year ASK growth, with passenger traffic broadly stable at approximately 125 million. This outlook reflects Middle East disruption, capacity rationalisation and the withdrawal of routes that do not cover variable operating costs. Q1 FY27 ASK growth is expected to be in the low-to-mid single digits.

Domestic demand remained healthy through May 2026 and early June 2026 despite higher fares, while international demand is softer due to geopolitical uncertainty. Management reiterated mid-teen year-on-year yield growth for Q1 FY27, aided by fuel surcharges, a stronger fare environment and a favourable base.

Fuel Costs and Near-Term Risks

Fuel inflation is a central near-term risk. Following the Middle East crisis, crude oil increased from USD 65-70 per barrel to USD 100-110 per barrel, while ATF prices rose sharply. The company recovered approximately 90 per cent of the incremental domestic fuel cost through a baseline fuel surcharge in April 2026, but recovered only approximately 70-75 per cent of international cost increases.

Government fuel-pricing support is positive, although the mechanism for passing benefits to airlines remains under discussion. InterGlobe Aviation is also evaluating fuel hedging for international flights. Key risks to the outlook include:

  • Further escalation or prolonged disruption in the Middle East.
  • Weak international demand and airspace restrictions.
  • Higher fuel costs and currency depreciation.
  • Under-recovery of international fuel costs.

Cost Leadership, Liquidity and Network Scale

Emkay highlights cost leadership, strong liquidity and network scale as key strengths. Approximately 30 per cent of InterGlobe Aviation's routes face limited direct competition, particularly across metro-to-non-metro and non-metro-to-non-metro markets.

The airline operates more than 650 direct routes, including over 500 domestic routes across 97 destinations and 89 directly connected non-metro cities. Its on-time performance ranks among the global top 10 for airlines operating more than 2,200 daily flights, and it ranked first domestically in 10 of 12 months in FY26.

Fleet Expansion and Operational Initiatives

Long-haul expansion is supported by the planned induction of approximately 60 XLRs and 40 widebody aircraft. Two XLRs have been delivered, with one deployed on Athens and another planned for Istanbul. These aircraft should enable long-thin routes and potentially support cargo opportunities.

Management continues to maintain its core single-aisle low-cost-carrier strategy rather than becoming a full-service airline. Stretch premium seating has received an encouraging response, with deployment planned across approximately 65 aircraft and a net promoter score of 75.

The Bengaluru in-house MRO facility is expected to become operational in four to five years. It is intended to improve cost efficiency and reduce maintenance-related operating risk.
