Investment View and Recommendation

Prabhudas Lilladher’s October 22, 2026 result update on Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services (MMFS) upgrades the stock to BUY from Accumulate following a 16 per cent correction in the preceding month. The broker expects continued lending growth across the wheels and non-wheels businesses, while remaining cautious about rising funding costs, margin pressure and potential rural stress linked to El Nino and drought conditions.

Q2FY27 Operating Performance

MMFS reported strong operating momentum in Q2FY27. Disbursements increased 22.1 per cent year on year to Rs 16,498 crore, while assets under management (AUM) rose 15.1 per cent year on year to Rs 1,46,512 crore.

Metric Q2FY27 performance
Disbursements Rs 16,498 crore, up 22.1% year on year
AUM Rs 1,46,512 crore, up 15.1% year on year
Wheels AUM growth 21% year on year
Non-wheels AUM growth 52% year on year; 20% of the lending book
Net interest income Rs 23,914 million, up 13.2% year on year; 0.6% below the broker’s estimate
Pre-provision operating profit Rs 17,914 million, up 19.5% year on year; 1.8% above the estimate
Profit after tax Rs 8,815 million, up 54.8% year on year; 0.5% below the estimate

Within wheels, passenger vehicles grew 28 per cent, commercial vehicles and construction equipment grew 16 per cent, and used commercial vehicles grew 15 per cent. Management aims to grow the core wheels business slightly ahead of the industry, with SME, mortgages and other lending segments adding growth.

Management retained its medium-term AUM growth aspiration of 16 per cent to 18 per cent. However, Prabhudas Lilladher incorporates a more conservative 14 per cent growth assumption for FY27E and 15 per cent for FY28E because of a high festive-season base and rural-demand risks.

Identifying Businesses With Long-Term Growth Potential

Exceptional wealth creation often comes from businesses that compound over time. DSIJ's Multibagger Pick focuses on identifying growth-oriented companies through detailed fundamental research.

Margins, Funding Costs and Fee Income

Reported net interest margin (NIM) moderated to about 7.0 per cent from 7.3 per cent in Q1FY27. Excess liquidity and seasonal trade advances were non-earning and compressed yield. Prabhudas Lilladher expects trade advances to convert into earning assets as festive demand develops, supporting loan income in Q3FY27.

Margin recovery remains constrained. Management expects funding costs to increase following the rate hike and refinancing, while limited pass-through is likely because around 80 per cent of AUM in the wheels portfolio is fixed rate. Higher pricing on incremental disbursements, particularly in self-employed agriculture segments, is expected to partly offset the impact.

The liquidity buffer had roughly doubled year on year to address macro uncertainty. Management sees scope to reduce the buffer if conditions improve. Fee income improved through cross-selling and diversification, although the proposed insurance commission regulations could reduce corporate-agency and MIBL income.

Asset Quality and Credit Costs

Asset quality was broadly stable quarter on quarter. Gross Stage 3 and Net Stage 3 stood at 3.42 per cent and 1.51 per cent, respectively. Collection efficiency improved to 97 per cent, while credit cost was 1.6 per cent in Q2FY27.

Management retained its credit-cost guidance of 1.3 per cent to 1.7 per cent and has an Rs 850 crore overlay buffer created in H2FY26 for El Nino and West Asia risks. It has strengthened collections in drought-prone regions and reduced funding in stressed locations.

The principal risk is a deterioration in the quality of the rural and tractor portfolios if drought conditions intensify.

Earnings Estimates and Valuation

Prabhudas Lilladher marginally reduced its FY28E and FY29E NII estimates by 2.8 per cent and 4.0 per cent, respectively. EPS estimates were lowered by 1.7 per cent for FY28E and 2.9 per cent for FY29E.

The broker’s Rs 350 target price is based on a sum-of-the-parts approach. The standalone business is valued at 1.5 times September 2028E price to adjusted book value, implying Rs 335 per share, while subsidiaries contribute Rs 19 per share after applying a 25 per cent holding-company discount.
