Investment View and Valuation

In its September 23, 2026 analyst meet update on Voltas, Prabhudas Lilladher upgraded the stock to Accumulate from Hold and set a sum-of-the-parts target price of Rs 1,258, reduced from Rs 1,308. The broker rolled its valuation forward to September 2028, introduced FY29E earnings and applied 40 times FY29E.

The upgrade reflects expectations of accelerating room air-conditioner growth, market-share gains and a broader product portfolio, despite a modest reduction in FY28E EBITDA and EPS estimates.

Room Air-Conditioner Demand and Market Share

Management indicated that room air-conditioner, or RAC, demand remained healthy. Industry RAC growth is expected at 15 to 20 per cent year on year in Q2FY27, while Voltas expects to grow ahead of the industry. Industry inventory was lower following April to June 2026, and secondary sales were healthy because of better heat conditions.

Voltas's channel inventory was below 30 days, supporting a healthier primary-sales environment. Voltas's RAC market share reached 18.6 per cent in July 2026 and was 17.5 per cent year to date, compared with 15.9 per cent in March 2026. The company maintained an approximately 6.4 percentage point lead over the second-largest player.

Management highlighted market-share gains as a key objective, supported by low-cost inventory and its market-share-focused strategy.

Pricing, Capacity and Cost Optimisation

Voltas has implemented two price increases: approximately 7 per cent following the new BEE pricing structure and approximately 5 per cent due to currency depreciation and higher commodity prices. Management said prices were slightly above pre-GST-cut levels. Further price pass-through depends on commodity prices and currency movements and can take two to four months.

AC schemes and offers such as free installation are being moderated to manage costs. Both RAC plants are operating close to full capacity, which limits further near-term margin improvement from utilisation. Pantnagar has about 70 per cent in-house coil-shop operations, while Chennai is fully backward integrated in coil-shop operations. Management expects cost optimisation to become visible over the coming quarters.

Commercial Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration

Commercial air-conditioning and commercial refrigeration offer better margins than RAC. In commercial air-conditioning, fixed-speed and inverter ducted ACs account for around one-third of the business, inverter ducted ACs account for around 20 per cent, and VRF contributes 12 to 15 per cent.

Voltas has approximately 25 per cent market share in ducted ACs and 8 to 10 per cent in VRF. In commercial refrigeration, Voltas has around 70 per cent share in low-temperature refrigeration. Deep freezers represent around half of commercial refrigeration sales, while water coolers and dispensers each contribute 20 to 25 per cent. The company is underleveraged in institutional key accounts, where margins are more challenging.

Capturing Growth Beyond Large Caps

Mid-cap companies can offer a compelling mix of growth and scalability. DSIJ's Mid Bridge identifies researched mid-cap opportunities with the potential to participate in emerging business trends.

New Growth Opportunities

The 50:50 compressor joint venture with Atomberg has completed prototype development and is running a large-scale pilot. Bulk production is targeted from Q4FY28 for the 2028 summer season. Around 70 per cent of output is expected to be used internally, with the balance offered to other brands.

Voltas has also formed a dedicated data-centre vertical and secured around Rs 2,000 million of data-centre orders across MEP and cooling solutions. Beko is strengthening its regional channel and has been gaining 1.5 to 2.0 percentage points of market share annually. Projects and exports have a limited growth outlook, while exports remain small.

Financial Outlook

Prabhudas Lilladher forecasts revenue, EBITDA and PAT compound annual growth of 13.2 per cent, 31.7 per cent and 39.7 per cent, respectively, over FY26 to FY29E.

Metric FY26 FY29E FY26-FY29E CAGR
Revenue Rs 142,445 million Rs 206,662 million 13.2 per cent
EBITDA margin 4.5 per cent 7.1 per cent EBITDA CAGR: 31.7 per cent
Adjusted PAT Rs 4,023 million Rs 10,970 million PAT CAGR: 39.7 per cent

Key Factors Affecting the Thesis

  • RAC demand and weather conditions.
  • Channel inventory levels.
  • Commodity and currency-led pricing pressure.
  • The timing of cost optimisation.
  • The ability to execute the compressor joint venture and data-centre opportunities.
