Industrial production takes a beating by 0.1% in June

Contracting by 0.1%, India’s industrial production turned negative on account of a drop witnessed in the manufacturing and capital goods sectors.

Contracting by 0.1%, India’s industrial production turned negative on account of a drop witnessed in the manufacturing and capital goods sectors. This is a four-year low since June 2013. The general index for June 2017 was at 119.6, which was 0.1% lower as compared to June 2016 and also lower than the increase of 2.7% in May, as per the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) data released by Central Statistics Office on Friday.
 
Among the various sectors, consumer durables lost steam by 2.13% in June after posting growth of 0.8% last month; electricity gained some extra power of 2.1% as compared to June 2016; and mining surfaced with growth of 0.4% as compared to June 2016. The output of primary goods and intermediate goods dropped down by 0.2% and 0.6%, respectively, as compared to growth of 8.2% and 6%, respectively, last year.
