Indices Close Lower, Axis Bank Down 4.4%

The indices remained in the red for today, with the Nifty closing 46 points lower at 6140 and Sensex down 156 points at 20666. Most of the sectoral indices closed in the negative zone, apart from Capital Goods and Healthcare. The Asian markets also ended the day in losses

The indices remained in the red for today. Heavyweight stocks like Axis Bank, Maruti, ONGC and HDFC ended over 2.5% lower. Nifty closed 46 points lower at 6140 and Sensex was down by 156 points at 20666. Both the indices ended negative by 0.75%.

On the NSE, 1496 shares closed in the green and 1714 shares were in the red.

Top 5 Nifty Gainers: Ranbaxy Labs closed with the highest gains on the index, up by 4.2%. Tata Steel, DLF, JP Associates and L&T were among the others that ended the day higher.

Top 5 Nifty Losers: Axis Bank closed lower by 4.4%, followed by PNB, HDFC, ACC and ONGC.

Most of the sectoral indices closed in the negative zone today, apart from Capital Goods and Healthcare. Bankex and Consumer Durables were hammered by 160 points and 120 points respectively. Oil & Gas lost 105 points and Auto dipped by 54 points respectively. Mid-Caps and Small-Caps closed lower by 15 points each.

The Asian markets all ended the day in the red. Hang Seng was 136 points lower and Nikkei lost 141 points. KOSPI and Shanghai Composite also closed on a negative note.

Buzzer: The stock of PNB saw panic selling on the bourses after mid-session. It made an intraday low of Rs 522.20 and closed below the technical level of Rs 530. If it dips below this level, it may reach the Rs 500 mark in the next few trading sessions.

Nifty Futures has closed below the crucial support level of 6180. If the index remains below this level, one may do well to exit from the buying positions.
