Flexi-cap and multi-cap funds are equity-oriented mutual funds, which invest in stocks of the companies across the different market capitalization such as large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap. These funds allow investors to diversify their portfolios across sectors as well as market capitalization.
Flexi-cap funds are quite similar to multi-cap funds in the way they invest across the market capitalization but differ in the proportion of funds invested in each of the market capitalizations. In the case of multi-cap funds, SEBI has mandated a minimum of 75 per cent of the total assets towards equity and equity-related instruments and a minimum of 25 per cent of allocation towards large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap companies each.
On the other hand, Flexi-cap funds have to put 65 per cent of the total assets towards equity and equity-related instruments and there is no pre-defined proportion to invest in small-cap, mid-cap, or large-cap stocks. Due to this benefit in Flexi-cap funds, many AMCs recategorized the multi-cap funds to Flexi-cap funds. The net Asset Under Management of flexi-cap funds has surged up from Rs 75,613.66 crore to ₹2,22,709.69 crore i.e., 194.53 per cent increase. Besides, net Asset Under Management of multi-cap funds has decreased from Rs 87,826.70 crore to Rs 44,515.64 crore i.e., 49.31 per cent decrease.
