Key Takeaways

Indian equities ended lower on Friday, with the Nifty 50 extending its decline to the 4th straight session as rising crude prices and escalating U.S.-Iran tensions weighed on investor sentiment. The Nifty 50 fell 29.85 points, or 0.12 per cent, to close at 24,366, while the Sensex declined 70.71 points, or 0.09 per cent, to 78,009.25. The Bank Nifty ended 0.25 per cent lower, while India VIX declined 1 per cent to below the 11.5 level.

The Nifty 50 opened at 24,361.90 and moved in a volatile range, hitting an Intraday high of 24,405.20 and a low of 24,296.80. The index recovered sharply from the day's low and briefly crossed 24,400 around 2 PM, but gains faded in the final hour as selling pressure returned. The index recovered from lower levels towards the close, with price discovery during the Closing Auction Session (CAS) helping it finish off the day's low.

Rising crude prices remained a key concern for domestic equities. Brent crude moved above USD 88 a barrel on Friday and was set for a weekly gain of more than 5 per cent as the U.S. stepped up economic pressure on Iran and maintained its naval blockade of Iranian ports. The International Energy Agency warned of the widest global oil supply deficit in five years in 2026. Concerns also persisted over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran and Oman unable to reach an agreement. U.S. forces are preparing to escort vessels through the strait amid continued shipping risks, while Iran-backed Houthi militants targeted Saudi Arabia's Jazan refinery. Additional Middle Eastern crude supplies to the U.S. are expected to provide some relief to low inventories.

Broader markets also ended under pressure. The Nifty Midcap 100 declined 0.53 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 0.69 per cent, indicating broader selling pressure.

Sectoral performance was largely negative, with only the Nifty Media index among the 11 key sectoral indices ending in positive territory. Nifty Media gained 0.97 per cent, marking its 3rd consecutive session of gains, led by a rise of more than 5 per cent in Zee Entertainment Enterprises. In contrast, the Nifty Pharma index fell 0.9 per cent, with Laurus Labs and Ipca Laboratories declining nearly 4.5 per cent each.

Among individual stocks, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles fell 4.32 per cent after its quarterly profit declined around 80 per cent, hurt by higher costs and foreign exchange losses. On the other hand, LG Electronics India jumped 9.59 per cent following strong Quarterly Results and confirmation of its full-year revenue target.

Bharti Airtel was the biggest positive contributor to the Nifty 50, adding 35.98 points to the index, followed by ICICI Bank with a 15.94-point contribution and Apollo Hospitals Enterprise with 7.18 points. On the downside, State Bank of India dragged the index by 13.79 points, Reliance Industries by 10.31 points and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles by 6.93 points.

Market breadth remained weak on August 14. Of the 3,461 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,479 advanced, 1,855 declined and 127 remained unchanged. A total of 111 stocks touched their 52-week highs, while 76 stocks hit their 52-week lows. Meanwhile, 115 stocks were locked in their Upper Circuits and 87 stocks were locked in Lower Circuits.

The combination of elevated crude prices, persistent geopolitical risks and weak broader-market participation kept the domestic market under pressure. Investors will continue to track developments around Iran, the Strait of Hormuz and crude prices, alongside corporate earnings and global market cues.
