✨ Key Takeaways

Market Update at 04:10 PM: Indian benchmark equity indices, the Sensex and Nifty 50, witnessed a volatile trading session on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, as selling pressure in Banking, financial and information technology stocks, elevated crude oil prices and uncertainty surrounding the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy decision weighed on investor sentiment. Despite opening on a weak note following Monday's sharp recovery, the markets failed to sustain buying interest in heavyweight stocks.

At the close, the Nifty 50 settled at 22,749.75, declining 3.45 points, or 0.02 per cent. The BSE Sensex closed at 73,598.67, down 8.08 points, or approximately 0.01 per cent. Both benchmark indices ended close to their previous closing levels, reflecting a lack of clear direction among Large-Cap stocks.

During the October derivatives series, the Nifty 50 gained 33.55 points, or 0.15 per cent, rising from 22,716.20 on September 29, 2026, to 22,749.75 on October 27, 2026. Despite considerable volatility throughout the series, the index managed to close marginally higher, with overall gains remaining limited.

Crude oil prices remained a major concern for domestic equities, with Brent crude trading near USD 116 per barrel, close to its six-month high. Elevated oil prices raised concerns about India's inflation outlook, import bill and broader macroeconomic stability. Meanwhile, the Indian rupee remained under pressure, weakening to 95.12 against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday.

Geopolitical developments in the Middle East continued to influence global financial markets, with investors monitoring the risk of further disruptions to energy supplies. Attention also remained focused on the U.S. Federal Reserve's monetary policy announcement scheduled for October 28. The decision is significant for emerging markets such as India, as changes in U.S. interest rates can influence global liquidity, currency movements and foreign institutional investment flows.

Despite the subdued performance of the benchmark indices, broader markets demonstrated relative strength. The Nifty Midcap 100 index advanced 1 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index surged 2.69 per cent. The outperformance of midcap and smallcap stocks indicated stronger buying interest beyond the heavyweight constituents of the benchmark indices.

Banking stocks emerged as a major drag on the market, with the Nifty Bank index declining 0.72 per cent. The Nifty IT index also fell approximately 0.26 per cent. Infosys declined around 0.26 per cent after reducing its FY27 revenue growth guidance, raising concerns about the demand outlook for IT services.

In contrast, the Nifty Media index jumped 3.66 per cent, emerging as one of the strongest-performing sectoral indices during the session. The divergence between sectoral indices highlighted the uneven nature of market performance, with selling pressure concentrated in banking and IT stocks while media stocks attracted buying interest.

Among individual stocks, Tata Consumer Products gained approximately 6.78 per cent, supported by stronger quarterly earnings. The stock emerged among the leading gainers after declining in the previous trading session. Sona BLW Precision Forgings advanced around 8.95 per cent following an improvement in quarterly revenue and profitability, attracting buying interest in the automobile components segment.

Bharti Airtel was the largest contributor to the Nifty 50's performance, adding 41.86 points to the index. Tata Consumer Products contributed 9.10 points, while Eternal added 8.64 points. On the other hand, HDFC Bank was the biggest drag, reducing the index by 26.39 points. ICICI Bank pulled the index down by 25.30 points, while State Bank of India (SBI) contributed to a decline of 14.21 points.

Market breadth remained positive on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with advancing stocks significantly outnumbering declining stocks. Of the 3,665 stocks traded, 2,455 advanced, 1,103 declined and 107 remained unchanged. However, the number of stocks touching fresh 52-week lows remained higher than those recording new highs. A total of 157 stocks touched their 52-week lows, compared with 28 stocks hitting 52-week highs. Additionally, 180 stocks hit their Upper Circuit limits, while 95 stocks hit their Lower Circuit limits during the session.

Overall, domestic equity markets ended the session nearly unchanged as weakness in banking and IT stocks offset gains elsewhere. While midcap and smallcap indices outperformed, elevated crude oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty, currency weakness and the upcoming U.S. Federal Reserve policy decision remained key factors influencing investor sentiment.

Market Update at 02:30 PM: Indian equity benchmarks traded lower on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, amid selling pressure in banking, IT and FMCG stocks. As of 2:18 PM, the Nifty 50 was trading at 22,651.25, down 101.95 points or 0.45 per cent, while the BSE Sensex declined 396 points or 0.54 per cent to 73,210.75.

Sectoral performance remained mixed, with the Nifty Media index leading the gains, advancing 2.63 per cent. The Nifty Pharma and Nifty Realty indices rose 1.56 per cent and 1.55 per cent, respectively, while the Nifty Auto index gained 0.68 per cent. On the downside, the Nifty IT index declined 0.77 per cent, the Nifty Financial Services index fell 0.75 per cent, and the Nifty FMCG index slipped 0.74 per cent. The Nifty Bank index also lost 0.71 per cent, limiting the recovery in the benchmark indices.

Among Nifty 50 constituents, Tata Consumer Products emerged as the top gainer, rising 5.37 per cent. BSE advanced 2.78 per cent, followed by Max Healthcare, which gained 2.43 per cent. Bharti Airtel and Power Grid also traded higher, advancing 2.27 per cent and 1.90 per cent, respectively.

On the losing side, Asian Paints declined 2.20 per cent, making it the biggest laggard among the listed stocks. Adani Enterprises fell 2.17 per cent, while Grasim Industries and Hindustan Unilever dropped 2.14 per cent and 2.13 per cent, respectively. ITC also traded lower, declining 1.79 per cent.

Market Update at 12:15 PM: Indian equity benchmarks traded on a flat note on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, following the sharp recovery witnessed in the previous trading session. At around 12:05 PM IST, the Nifty 50 was trading at 22,763.55, up 10.35 points or 0.05 per cent, while the BSE Sensex slipped 30.97 points or 0.04 per cent to 73,575.78. Despite limited movement in the benchmark indices, buying interest remained visible across media, realty, pharmaceutical and automobile stocks, while IT and FMCG shares faced selling pressure.

Sectoral performance remained mixed, with the Nifty Media index emerging as the top performer, advancing 3.66 per cent, followed by Nifty Realty, which gained 1.70 per cent. Nifty Pharma and Nifty Auto rose 1.64 per cent and 1.40 per cent, respectively. Nifty Metal advanced 0.71 per cent, while Nifty Energy and Nifty PSU Bank gained 0.63 per cent and 0.62 per cent, respectively. On the other hand, Nifty IT declined 1.07 per cent, emerging as the weakest sectoral index, followed by Nifty FMCG, down 0.30 per cent, and Nifty Financial Services, which slipped 0.14 per cent. The Nifty Bank remained largely unchanged, gaining just 0.01 per cent.

Among individual Nifty 50 constituents, Tata Consumer Products emerged as the top gainer, rising 4.86 per cent to Rs 982. Bajaj Auto advanced 2.46 per cent to Rs 10,319, while Trent gained 2.43 per cent to Rs 2,820.80. Max Healthcare and Bharat Electronics (BEL) also rose 2.34 per cent each, trading at Rs 854.50 and Rs 371.50, respectively.

On the losing side, Hindustan Unilever led the declines, falling 2.14 per cent to Rs 1,779.60. TCS slipped 1.69 per cent to Rs 2,492.20, while Grasim Industries declined 1.34 per cent to Rs 2,910.40. ICICI Bank and Adani Enterprises also faced selling pressure, dropping 1.21 per cent and 1.08 per cent, respectively.

The market performance reflected selective buying interest despite limited movement in the benchmark indices. Gains in media, realty, pharmaceutical and automobile stocks helped offset weakness in IT, FMCG and select heavyweight financial stocks. Following Monday's 153-point recovery, the Nifty 50 continued to hold above the 22,750 mark. However, the absence of strong participation from banking and IT heavyweights restricted further upside.

Going ahead, sustained trading above 22,750 and a recovery in heavyweight banking and IT stocks will be important for extending the rebound. Meanwhile, the divergence between sectoral indices indicates that stock-specific and sector-specific movements continue to dominate trading activity.

Market Update at 09:30 AM: The Sensex and Nifty 50 opened lower on Tuesday, with both benchmark indices declining nearly 0.20 per cent. The Nifty 50 opened at 22,708.80, down 0.19 per cent, while the BSE Sensex opened at 73,484.38, falling 0.16 per cent.

Sectorally, the Nifty IT and Nifty Oil and Gas indices were the top laggards, declining nearly 1.6 per cent and 0.8 per cent, respectively. The Nifty FMCG and Nifty Private Bank indices also traded lower.

In contrast, the broader market indices traded higher. The Nifty Midcap 100 gained 0.07 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 advanced 1 per cent.

Pre-Market Update at 7:40 AM: GIFT Nifty indicated a weak start for domestic equities, trading at 22,672 at 6:54 AM IST on October 27, 2026. The index was 81.2 points below the previous Nifty 50 close of 22,753.20, pointing to a mildly negative opening.

The domestic market enters the session after a positive close on October 26, when the Nifty 50 and Sensex gained around 0.7 per cent each. However, elevated crude oil prices, a firmer U.S. dollar and major central-bank policy decisions scheduled for this week could influence market sentiment.

The U.S. Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of Japan are scheduled to announce their monetary-policy decisions this week. Markets expect all three central banks to keep interest rates unchanged, according to the available report. Their policy commentary could influence global bond yields, the dollar and foreign portfolio flows, with potential implications for Indian financials, IT exporters and other rate-sensitive sectors.

Crude oil prices remained elevated amid supply concerns ahead of the Northern Hemisphere winter. Brent crude was trading at USD 109.84 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude stood at USD 102.36 per barrel as of 7:00 AM IST on October 27. Brent declined 0.27 per cent, while WTI fell 0.41 per cent.

As India is a major crude oil importer, elevated prices remain relevant for the country's import bill, inflation expectations and the rupee. Oil marketing companies and fuel-intensive sectors, including aviation, paints, chemicals, Logistics and automobiles, could remain in focus alongside upstream energy companies.

Margin-trading-facility (MTF) positions also warrant attention. Outstanding positions declined to around Rs 1.54 lakh crore on October 22 from approximately Rs 1.60 lakh crore in September. An estimated 46 per cent of the margin-funding book, or roughly Rs 72,000 crore, is linked to smallcap stocks. The Nifty Smallcap 250 had declined 7.10 per cent in the previous week and approximately 8.5 per cent during October. Further unwinding of leveraged positions could raise liquidity and volatility concerns in smaller and less-liquid stocks.

HDFC Bank will also be in focus as Anup Bagchi assumes charge as Managing Director and CEO on October 27 for a three-year term ending October 26, 2029. He succeeds Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose term ended on October 26. The RBI-approved leadership transition at India's largest private-sector lender will be monitored for continuity in strategy, growth and profitability execution. Given the bank's weight in benchmark indices, the development is also relevant for the broader financial sector.

Wall Street closed higher in the previous session, with the Nasdaq leading the gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.28 per cent to 52,361.58, while the S&P 500 gained 0.70 per cent to 7,676.77. The Nasdaq advanced 0.82 per cent to 26,169.38.

Asian markets were broadly positive in early trade. Japan's Nikkei rose 2.36 per cent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.51 per cent and the Shanghai Composite advanced 0.19 per cent. European markets also ended higher in the previous session. Germany's DAX advanced 0.91 per cent, France's CAC 40 gained 0.83 per cent and the FTSE 100 rose 0.72 per cent.

Gold was nearly unchanged at USD 4,014.90, down 0.02 per cent, while silver rose 0.36 per cent to USD 54.13. The Dollar Index gained 0.13 per cent to 102.09, while the rupee was trading around Rs 95.18 per U.S. dollar, unchanged from the previous reference level.

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stood at 4.995 per cent, up 0.003 percentage points. Movements in U.S. Treasury yields and the dollar could influence global risk appetite and foreign portfolio flows into emerging markets.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers of Indian equities worth Rs 1,462.49 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers worth Rs 2,609.57 crore. Domestic institutional buying contrasted with foreign outflows in the latest available data. Investors will monitor these flows alongside global central-bank decisions, dollar movements and crude oil prices.

The Nifty 50 closed at 22,753.20 on October 26, gaining 153.20 points or 0.68 per cent. The index moved between an Intraday low of 22,387.35 and a high of 22,753.20, finishing at the day's high. The BSE Sensex gained 482.92 points or 0.66 per cent to close at 73,606.75. It traded between 72,514.57 and 73,606.75 during the session, also ending at its intraday high.

India VIX rose 1.78 per cent to 17.16, indicating an increase in expected market volatility. The rise comes amid upcoming global policy decisions, elevated crude oil prices and concerns about leveraged positions in smaller stocks.
