Key Takeaways

Market Update at 03:55 PM: Indian benchmark equity indices ended higher on Friday, August 28, recovering from the previous two sessions of losses. Gains were led by IT stocks following a strong performance from Nvidia and an upbeat outlook for artificial intelligence demand. However, caution ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve Chair’s speech and volatility linked to the new closing auction mechanism limited the upside.

The Nifty 50 opened at 24,122.60 and climbed to an Intraday high of 24,188.30 before witnessing profit booking. The index slipped below the 24,100 mark around noon but recovered during the second half of the session as buying emerged at lower levels.

At the close, the Nifty 50 gained 84.80 points, or 0.35 per cent, to settle at 24,175.65. The Sensex advanced 330.91 points to close at 77,264.51. The Bank Nifty ended marginally lower by 0.02 per cent. India VIX declined nearly 4 per cent and moved below the 11 level, indicating subdued market volatility.

Brent crude traded near $88 per barrel as investors continued to monitor developments in the Middle East and efforts to restore normal flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Oil exports from the Persian Gulf have recovered to around two-thirds of pre-conflict levels, with regional crude exports estimated at 15-16 million barrels per day. However, volumes remain below pre-conflict levels. An Iran-Oman revenue-sharing agreement concerning the strategic waterway has not guaranteed an immediate reopening, while the U.S. administration has ruled out returning to the terms of a preliminary June agreement with Iran.

Broader market indices also closed higher. The Nifty Midcap 100 gained 0.05 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 advanced 0.20 per cent. Despite the gains in benchmark indices, market breadth remained relatively mixed, with declining stocks outnumbering advances on the NSE.

Seven of the 11 sectoral indices ended higher. The Nifty IT index emerged as the top performer, surging 3.51 per cent and recording its strongest gain in nearly two months. The rally followed Nvidia’s strong results and upbeat AI demand outlook, which improved global technology sentiment and raised expectations that continued AI infrastructure spending could support future growth for Indian IT companies.

The Nifty FMCG index was the biggest laggard, declining 0.46 per cent and extending its losing streak to three consecutive trading sessions.

Among individual stocks, Ather Energy gained 8.09 per cent after Hero MotoCorp increased its stake in the electric two-wheeler manufacturer to 32.8 per cent through a $184 million share purchase. Tejas Networks climbed 7.63 per cent after securing an order from Tata Consultancy Services.

HDFC Bank was the biggest contributor to the Nifty 50’s gains, adding 31.03 points to the index. Infosys contributed 25.54 points, while Tata Consultancy Services added 20.77 points. On the downside, ICICI Bank was the biggest drag, reducing the index by 31.51 points. ITC and Shriram Finance also weighed on the benchmark, contributing negative points of 6.30 and 4.30, respectively.

Market breadth on the NSE remained in favour of declining stocks. Out of 3,603 stocks traded, 1,918 advanced, 1,561 declined and 124 remained unchanged. A total of 132 stocks touched their 52-week highs, while 84 stocks hit their 52-week lows. Meanwhile, 140 stocks were locked in their Upper Circuits and 80 stocks were locked in their Lower Circuits.

Overall, Indian equities closed higher on August 28, supported by strong buying in IT stocks and positive global technology sentiment following Nvidia’s results. However, weakness in FMCG stocks, caution ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve Chair’s speech and volatility surrounding the new closing auction mechanism kept gains measured.

Market Update at 2:40 PM: The Nifty 50 and Sensex traded higher in afternoon trade on August 28, supported by gains in information technology stocks as investors remained cautious ahead of U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s remarks at the Jackson Hole Symposium.

Market participants are closely watching Kevin Warsh’s remarks at the Jackson Hole Symposium for cues on the U.S. Federal Reserve’s monetary policy outlook, with potential implications for global equity markets and investor sentiment.

Market Update at 01:30 PM: Indian equity markets traded with a mildly positive bias on Friday, with the Nifty 50 and Sensex holding gains after a volatile start. The Nifty 50 was trading at 24,104.70, up 13.85 points or 0.06 per cent, while the Sensex stood at 77,070.31, gaining 136.72 points or 0.18 per cent as of 1:15 PM on August 28, 2026. IT stocks remained the key support for the benchmarks, helping the market recover from recent weakness.

The broader market remained mixed, with the Nifty Bank trading near 57,350 levels and down around 0.3 per cent as select banking stocks witnessed profit booking. Midcap and smallcap indices remained relatively steady, indicating continued buying interest in the broader market despite weakness in some heavyweight counters.

Sector-wise, Nifty IT emerged as the top performer, gaining around 3 per cent as investors tracked optimism around artificial intelligence-led demand following positive global technology cues. Stocks including Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HCLTech and LTIMindtree witnessed buying interest.

On the other hand, banking and financial stocks remained under pressure, with Nifty Bank slipping into negative territory. Realty and select PSU banking stocks also witnessed profit booking as traders remained cautious ahead of key global events.

Among individual stocks, Tejas Networks remained in focus after gaining sharply following an order win from Tata Consultancy Services. The stock had gained around 9 per cent in the previous session following the development.

Market Update at 11:10 PM: The Indian equity market traded higher on Friday, with the Nifty 50 and Sensex gaining amid strength in IT stocks. Investors remained cautious ahead of remarks from U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole Symposium, which could provide cues on the central bank's monetary policy outlook.

As of 11:00 AM, the Sensex rose 317.23 points, or 0.41 per cent, to 77,250.82, while the Nifty 50 gained 65.40 points, or 0.27 per cent, to 24,156.25.

In the broader market, the Nifty MidCap index advanced 0.03 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index gained 0.16 per cent, indicating a largely positive trend across the market.

Sector-wise, the Nifty IT index was the top performer, rising over 3 per cent. The Nifty Metal and Nifty Media indices also outperformed the broader market. On the other hand, the Nifty Private Bank and Nifty Financial Services indices underperformed.

Market participants are now closely tracking the Jackson Hole Symposium for cues on the U.S. Federal Reserve's interest-rate outlook and its potential impact on global equities.

Market Update at 09:30 AM: The Nifty 50 and the Sensex opened higher on Friday, supported by gains in information technology stocks, while investors remained focused on U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s remarks at the Jackson Hole Symposium.

As of 9:18 AM, the Sensex was up 193.02 points, or 0.25 per cent, at 77,126.61, while the Nifty 50 gained 33.80 points, or 0.14 per cent, to trade at 24,124.65.

Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys were among the top gainers on the Nifty 50. The IT sector led the early market gains, with the Nifty IT index rising more than 1 per cent.

In the broader market, the Nifty MidCap index advanced 0.03 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index gained 0.16 per cent. Among other sectors, Nifty Metal and Nifty Media also outperformed the benchmark indices.

On the other hand, Nifty Private Bank and Nifty Financial Services were among the underperforming sectoral indices. Market participants are expected to closely track the U.S. Federal Reserve Chair’s comments for cues on the outlook for interest rates and global markets.

Pre-Market Update at 7:40 AM: The Indian stock market is likely to begin Friday's session on a positive note after benchmark indices extended their decline in the previous session. Investors will track movements in GIFT Nifty, Asian markets, the U.S. market, crude oil prices, institutional flows and comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole symposium.

GIFT Nifty was trading around the 24,266 level in the early session on August 28, indicating positive start for Indian equities. The domestic market entered the session after the Nifty 50 declined 117 points, or 0.48 per cent, to close at 24,090.85 on Thursday. The Sensex also fell 539 points, or 0.70 per cent, to settle at 76,933.59. Volatility remained elevated during the expiry-day session, particularly towards the closing phase.

Wall Street closed higher on Thursday, supported by strong gains in technology stocks. The S&P 500 gained 0.7 per cent, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.6 per cent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.2 per cent. Technology stocks received a boost after Nvidia reported strong earnings and issued an optimistic outlook, easing concerns over the sustainability of artificial intelligence-related investment. Salesforce and other technology companies also contributed to the positive market sentiment. However, U.S. stock futures were largely flat in early trade as investors awaited further signals on the future path of interest rates.

Asian markets traded on a mixed note as investors assessed the positive cues from Wall Street while remaining cautious ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's remarks. Japan's Nikkei 225 and Topix moved higher, supported by technology stocks, while South Korea's Kospi and Hong Kong futures faced selling pressure. The mixed trend reflects caution among investors ahead of key central bank commentary and ongoing geopolitical developments.

Global markets will closely watch Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's comments at the Jackson Hole symposium. Investors will look for clues regarding the outlook for U.S. interest rates and the possibility of changes in monetary policy in the coming months. Fed funds futures indicate that markets are largely expecting the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates unchanged at its next meeting. Any hawkish signals could keep U.S. Treasury yields elevated and potentially affect capital flows towards emerging markets, including India.

Crude oil prices moved lower on Friday and remained on track for a weekly decline. Brent crude futures slipped 0.3 per cent to USD 89.45 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude declined 0.3 per cent to USD 83.31 per barrel. For the week, Brent crude was down around 5.3 per cent, while WTI had declined about 4.3 per cent. Softer crude prices could provide some relief to the Indian economy, which is heavily dependent on oil imports. Lower crude prices are generally positive for oil marketing companies, aviation companies, paint manufacturers and chemical companies due to reduced input and fuel costs. However, the situation remains sensitive to developments related to the U.S.-Iran conflict and broader Middle East tensions.

Foreign institutional investors remained cautious during the previous session, turning net sellers of Indian equities worth Rs 298.26 crore on August 27. Domestic institutional investors continued to support the market, recording net purchases of Rs 4,977.17 crore. The strong domestic buying helped cushion the impact of foreign selling and remains an important source of support for Indian equities.

Banking stocks are likely to remain under focus after HDFC Bank emerged as one of the major drags on the benchmark indices in the previous session. The stock remained under pressure amid concerns related to a U.S. class-action lawsuit. Weakness in heavyweight financial stocks weighed on the Nifty 50, while PSU banks and other sectors such as FMCG, services and IT also witnessed selling pressure.

The Nifty 50 currently faces resistance in the 24,300-24,400 zone, while the 24,000 level remains an important support area. A sustained move below this level could increase selling pressure, whereas a recovery above the resistance zone may improve short-term sentiment.

The Indian rupee closed at 95.54 against the U.S. dollar in the previous session, declining 0.1 per cent amid importer dollar demand and month-end currency flows. The movement of the dollar and elevated U.S. Treasury yields will remain important for foreign portfolio flows.

Investors will also monitor developments in the U.S.-Iran conflict, corporate announcements, promoter stake sales, block deals and regulatory developments. Technology stocks may remain in focus following the strong performance of Nvidia and the broader rally in U.S. technology shares.

Overall, the market is likely to remain influenced by global cues, crude oil prices, foreign institutional flows and the performance of heavyweight banking stocks. With the Nifty 50 trading close to the key 24,000 support level, volatility could remain elevated during the session.
