On Friday, the major market indices posted moderate gains and closed near the day's high. S&P BSE Sensex, the barometer index, improved by 344.63 points or 0.65 per cent to reach 53,760.78. To close at the 16,049.20 level, Nifty 50 index rose 110.55 points or 0.69 per cent.  

S&P BSE Midcap index climbed 0.84 per cent while S&P BSE Smallcap index jumped 0.52 per cent in the overall market. Positive market breadth was present. Almost 1,779 shares increased and 1,504 shares decreased on BSE while 151 shares remained unchanged overall.   

Both FMCG, as well as capital goods indices, increased a per cent each while the auto index surged 2 per cent. However, the metal index decreased by 1 per cent. Among the biggest gainers on Nifty were Tata Consumer Products, Titan Company, Eicher Motors, Tata Motors, and HUL while the losers included Tata Steel, Power Grid Corporation, HCL Technologies, Wipro, and JSW Steel. While stocks in Asia fluctuated, the European markets climbed overall.
