Pre-Market Update at 7:40 AM: GIFT Nifty indicated a weak start for domestic equities, trading at 22,672 at 6:54 AM IST on October 27, 2026. The index was 81.2 points below the previous Nifty 50 close of 22,753.20, pointing to a mildly negative opening.

The domestic market enters the session after a positive close on October 26, when the Nifty 50 and Sensex gained around 0.7 per cent each. However, elevated crude oil prices, a firmer U.S. dollar and major central-bank policy decisions scheduled for this week could influence market sentiment.

The U.S. Federal Reserve, European Central Bank and Bank of Japan are scheduled to announce their monetary-policy decisions this week. Markets expect all three central banks to keep interest rates unchanged, according to the available report. Their policy commentary could influence global bond yields, the dollar and foreign portfolio flows, with potential implications for Indian financials, IT exporters and other rate-sensitive sectors.

Crude oil prices remained elevated amid supply concerns ahead of the Northern Hemisphere winter. Brent crude was trading at USD 109.84 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude stood at USD 102.36 per barrel as of 7:00 AM IST on October 27. Brent declined 0.27 per cent, while WTI fell 0.41 per cent.

As India is a major crude oil importer, elevated prices remain relevant for the country's import bill, inflation expectations and the rupee. Oil marketing companies and fuel-intensive sectors, including aviation, paints, chemicals, Logistics and automobiles, could remain in focus alongside upstream energy companies.

Margin-trading-facility (MTF) positions also warrant attention. Outstanding positions declined to around Rs 1.54 lakh crore on October 22 from approximately Rs 1.60 lakh crore in September. An estimated 46 per cent of the margin-funding book, or roughly Rs 72,000 crore, is linked to smallcap stocks. The Nifty Smallcap 250 had declined 7.10 per cent in the previous week and approximately 8.5 per cent during October. Further unwinding of leveraged positions could raise liquidity and volatility concerns in smaller and less-liquid stocks.

HDFC Bank will also be in focus as Anup Bagchi assumes charge as Managing Director and CEO on October 27 for a three-year term ending October 26, 2029. He succeeds Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose term ended on October 26. The RBI-approved leadership transition at India's largest private-sector lender will be monitored for continuity in strategy, growth and profitability execution. Given the bank's weight in benchmark indices, the development is also relevant for the broader financial sector.

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stood at 4.995 per cent, up 0.003 percentage points. Movements in U.S. Treasury yields and the dollar could influence global risk appetite and foreign portfolio flows into emerging markets.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers of Indian equities worth Rs 1,462.49 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers worth Rs 2,609.57 crore. Domestic institutional buying contrasted with foreign outflows in the latest available data. Investors will monitor these flows alongside global central-bank decisions, dollar movements and crude oil prices.
