Renewable Energy Revolution: 17.6 MW Tamil Nadu Solar Project Puts Stock On Radar

Orient Green Power has commissioned a 17.6 MW AC solar project in Tamil Nadu, completing the solar expansion commitment linked to its 2024 rights issue and lifting total solar capacity to 24.6 MW AC.

Key Takeaways

Orient Green Power Company Limited has commissioned a 17.60 MW AC Solar power project in Tamil Nadu, marking the completion of the solar-capacity expansion it had committed to fund through its 2024 rights issue.

The project, developed by its 70 per cent subsidiary Delta Renewable Energy Private Limited, was commissioned during the late evening of September 22, 2026, in Vandavasi Taluk and Chetpet Taluk of Thiruvannamalai district, the company said in an exchange filing on September 23, 2026.

The facility has a DC capacity of 24.64 MW. It was developed under an engineering, procurement and Construction contract with Remon Solutions Private Limited, whose execution had been disclosed by Orient Green Power on December 29, 2025.

With the latest commissioning, the company’s aggregate installed solar capacity has increased to 24.6 MW AC, or 34.44 MW DC. The new plant accounts for roughly 72 per cent of Orient Green Power’s installed solar capacity after the addition. Its earlier 7 MW AC, or 9.8 MW DC, solar plant was commissioned in December 2025.

The project is strategically relevant because it takes the company from a predominantly wind-focused renewable generator to a business with a growing solar portfolio. Orient Green Power generates and sells electricity primarily from wind and solar assets, with renewable generation accounting for 99 per cent of its FY2025-26 turnover.

The solar commissioning also meets a key operational target outlined by management for FY2026-27. In its annual report, the company had identified completion of committed solar expansion alongside windmill repowering as a central priority. Delta had proposed development of 25 MW AC of solar capacity, while rights issue proceeds had been allocated towards a 19.8 MW AC, 29 MW DC first-phase solar project in Tamil Nadu.

Orient Green Power’s latest quarterly commentary had indicated that the 17.6 MW solar project was under implementation and targeted for commissioning by the end of September. The company had also said that approval-related delays in Tamil Nadu appeared to be easing.

The addition could provide a more diversified generation base, although the company’s earnings remain materially influenced by wind availability, grid conditions, power realisations and customer collections. Management had said that the June quarter was affected by delayed monsoon conditions and weaker early wind generation, while new capacity additions partly cushioned the impact.

In the latest reported quarter, Orient Green Power posted net sales of Rs 81.43 crore, down 6.81 per cent year-on-year, while profit after Tax declined 16.98 per cent to Rs 23.95 crore. On an annual basis, consolidated revenue from operations rose 12.5 per cent to Rs 292.95 crore in FY2025-26, while profit after tax increased to Rs 71.89 crore from Rs 34.96 crore in the preceding year.

The company is also progressing with a 7.8 MW wind repowering programme in Tamil Nadu. Management has said repowering older turbines could improve generation efficiency, though future growth beyond modest debt-funded expansion will depend on the availability of fresh capital. The company has acknowledged that funding remains a key constraint for its longer-term renewable capacity ambitions.

As of 9:51 AM on September 23, 2026, Orient Green Power shares were trading at Rs 9.10, up 1.11 per cent from the previous close of Rs 9.00. The stock was about 36.6 per cent below its 52-week high of Rs 14.35 and around 13.3 per cent above its 52-week low of Rs 8.03. Over the past year, the stock has declined 35.3 per cent, compared with a 3.73 per cent fall in the BSE 500.
