Partnership Targets USD 4.1 Billion Immuno-Oncology Market
Shilpa Biologicals Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shilpa Medicare, has entered into a co-development and supply agreement with Orion Corporation, a globally recognised pharmaceutical company headquartered in Finland, for an intravenous (IV) nivolumab biosimilar, one of the world's most widely used cancer immunotherapies. The collaboration targets the European market, where the originator product is approaching loss of exclusivity, creating a significant opportunity for biosimilars.
According to IQVIA/IMS data cited by the company, nivolumab generated approximately USD 4.1 billion in European sales during 2025, highlighting the sizeable commercial opportunity. The partnership aims to expand patient access to high-quality biosimilars while helping healthcare systems manage rising oncology treatment costs.
Roles of Both Companies
Under the agreement, Orion Corporation will hold the exclusive rights to register, market, distribute and sell the nivolumab biosimilar across Europe and will act as the Marketing Authorisation holder in the region.
Meanwhile, Shilpa Biologicals will lead product development and serve as the exclusive long-term commercial manufacturer and supplier from its advanced EU-GMP-certified biologics facility in Dharwad, India. Besides long-term supply revenue, Shilpa will also receive certain development and regulatory milestone payments from Orion, while the financial consideration remains confidential.
