This Spirits Stock Enters Tequila Market; FIIs and DIIs Increase Stake

Tilaknagar Industries has entered the tequila category through a Rs 22 crore investment in Black Tiger Distilleries, gaining a 30 per cent stake and access to the premium Bodega Suprema No. 5 tequila brand.

Key Takeaways

Tilaknagar Industries Ltd is expanding beyond its core brandy business with an entry into India’s fast-growing tequila market.

The company has entered into a strategic partnership with Black Tiger Distilleries (BTD), the Indian spirits company behind Bodega Suprema No. 5. As part of the deal, Tilaknagar Industries Ltd will invest a total of Rs 22 crore in BTD for a 30 per cent shareholding on a fully diluted basis.

The investment will be made in two tranches. The company will invest Rs 6 crore in the first tranche, followed by a second investment of Rs 16 crore on or before 12 months from the first tranche.

The move marks Tilaknagar Industries Ltd’s entry into the tequila category at a time when demand for premium spirits is gaining momentum in India.

India’s tequila market gaining momentum

According to IWSR data cited by the company, India is currently the fastest-growing major tequila market globally.

Tequila volumes in India grew at approximately 60 per cent CAGR between 2020 and 2025. The category also recorded growth of around 34 per cent in the latest year, while the market is projected to grow at a 13 per cent CAGR through 2030.

The growth is being supported by rising consumer interest in premium spirits, the expansion of cocktail culture and changing drinking occasions.

Tilaknagar Industries Ltd sees an opportunity in this shift by targeting a segment that it believes remains relatively underpenetrated in India.

Focus on 100 per cent Blue Weber Agave tequila

The Indian tequila market has traditionally offered consumers two broad choices. These include lower-priced mixto tequila and premium 100 per cent Blue Weber Agave tequila positioned at the luxury end of the market.

Through its partnership with Black Tiger Distilleries, Tilaknagar Industries Ltd aims to address the gap between these segments.

Bodega Suprema No. 5 offers tequila made from 100 per cent Blue Weber Agave, with the brand positioned to offer an authentic tequila experience at a more accessible price point.

FIIs and DIIs Increase Stake in June 2026

FIIs increased their stake marginally from 16.87 per cent to 16.88 per cent, while DIIs raised their holding from 5.92 per cent to 6.28 per cent.
