Product mix was a key source of margin improvement. Protection, non-par and par APE grew 40 per cent, 66 per cent and 25 per cent year-on-year respectively, whereas annuity and ULIP APE declined 8 per cent and 1 per cent.

Product category APE growth in 2QFY27
Protection Up 40 per cent year-on-year
Non-par Up 66 per cent year-on-year
Par Up 25 per cent year-on-year
Annuity Down 8 per cent year-on-year
ULIP Down 1 per cent year-on-year

Traditional APE rose 23 per cent year-on-year and its contribution increased to 55 per cent from 49 per cent a year earlier. The favourable product mix contributed 2.6 per cent to VNB margin expansion in 1HFY27, while favourable yield-curve movements added 0.8 per cent. Higher expenses, largely related to GST exemption, reduced margin by 2 per cent. Weak equity markets affected ULIP demand, while protection and guaranteed-product demand remained affordable.

Identifying Businesses With Long-Term Growth Potential

Exceptional wealth creation often comes from businesses that compound over time. DSIJ's Multibagger Pick focuses on identifying growth-oriented companies through detailed fundamental research.

Distribution Mix and Growth Drivers

Canara Bank contributed 59 per cent of 2Q individual APE, HSBC Bank contributed 21 per cent, other banks 6 per cent and alternate channels 15 per cent.

The newly launched agency channel generated Rs 25.7 crore of APE in 2QFY27. Management added around 1,900 agents and generated about Rs 40 crore of agency APE in 1HFY27.

  • The under-penetrated PSU bank distribution engine.
  • Premiumised HSBC flows.
  • Rising branch activation.
  • Agency expansion.
  • Operating leverage.

Motilal Oswal views these factors as growth levers. Management expects APE growth to exceed the industry, supported by a higher traditional-product mix. Credit life APE grew 35 per cent year-on-year, aided by home and education loans.

Key Monitorables and Solvency

  • Final insurance-distribution regulations and their potential effect on credit life.
  • GST-related cost pressure.
  • The sustainability of the traditional product mix.
  • The need for subordinated debt to support solvency.

The expense ratio was 20.3 per cent in 2QFY27 against 18.6 per cent a year earlier, above the proposed 15 per cent expense-of-management threshold. Management expects operating leverage and efficiency actions to narrow the gap within two years.

Solvency declined to 180 per cent from 198 per cent because of the equity-market correction and a higher protection mix. Management said it could raise subordinated debt if needed, without an equity raise. Motilal Oswal believes current operations broadly align with the consultation paper, while final regulations remain pending.
