Investment View and Valuation

ICICI Securities’ October 23, 2026 results update on CreditAccess Grameen retains a BUY recommendation but cuts the target price to Rs 1,500 from Rs 1,750. The broker remains constructive because strong H1FY27 profitability, improving asset quality and the rapid expansion of retail finance support the company’s growth and return outlook.

However, ICICI Securities reduced its valuation multiple to 2.25 times from 2.75 times on September 2027E book value per share to account for near-term asset-quality and interest-rate-cycle risks.

Q2FY27 Financial Performance

CreditAccess Grameen reported record Q2FY27 PAT of Rs 5,016 million, up 2 per cent QoQ and 299 per cent YoY. Net interest income rose 10 per cent QoQ and 31 per cent YoY to Rs 13,507 million, while pre-provision operating profit rose 11 per cent QoQ and 40 per cent YoY to Rs 9,702 million.

Metric Q2FY27 Change / Comparison
PAT Rs 5,016 million Up 2% QoQ; up 299% YoY
Net interest income Rs 13,507 million Up 10% QoQ; up 31% YoY
Pre-provision operating profit Rs 9,702 million Up 11% QoQ; up 40% YoY
Portfolio yield 22.3% Up 50 bps QoQ
Funding cost 9.1% Down 10 bps QoQ
NIM 15.1% Up 70 bps QoQ
Cost-to-income ratio 28.2% 29.3% in Q1FY27; 32.5% in Q2FY26
Credit cost 3.9% of average AUM 2.8% in the previous quarter
Provisions Rs 2,992 million Up 41% QoQ

The result was supported by the higher portfolio yield, lower funding cost and lower interest reversals as delinquencies improved. Credit cost, however, increased to 3.9 per cent of average AUM, with provisions rising 41 per cent QoQ to Rs 2,992 million.

Identifying Businesses With Long-Term Growth Potential

Exceptional wealth creation often comes from businesses that compound over time. DSIJ's Multibagger Pick focuses on identifying growth-oriented companies through detailed fundamental research.

Asset Quality and Credit Costs

Asset quality returned to its best level in 10 quarters. Q2FY27 GNPA declined to 1.79 per cent from 2.18 per cent QoQ and 3.65 per cent YoY, while NNPA fell to 0.59 per cent from 0.76 per cent QoQ.

  • Stage-3 provision coverage improved to 67.5 per cent.
  • PAR 90+ reduced to 1.11 per cent.
  • Collection efficiency recovered to about 98 per cent.

Nonetheless, monthly PAR 15+ accretion increased to 0.26 per cent in September 2026 from 0.16 per cent in June 2026. Management attributed the increase to excess rainfall and flooding in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, as well as lower wage income and migration in deficient-monsoon states.

CreditAccess Grameen created an additional Rs 880 million provision buffer, equivalent to about 30 bps of AUM, for drought-related risk.

Retail Finance and Rural Growth Strategy

The strategic shift towards a broader rural-focused inclusive-finance platform is central to the investment case. Retail finance reached 23.3 per cent of AUM in Q2FY27, compared with 20.6 per cent QoQ and about 11 per cent a year earlier.

The Rs 72,000 million retail finance book was primarily made up of individual business loans, including Unnati at Rs 30,300 million and Unnati Lite at Rs 34,700 million. The secured book grew 61 per cent YoY to Rs 7,000 million, while the two-wheeler book rose to Rs 600 million from Rs 200 million in Q1FY27.

Management expects 6 to 8 per cent of customers annually to graduate into individual loans, supporting retention and asset quality. Borrower retention improved to 88 per cent in H1FY27 from 85 per cent in FY26.

FY27 Guidance and Outlook

Management upgraded FY27 guidance after strong H1FY27 performance.

Guidance metric Revised FY27 guidance Earlier guidance
NIM 14.4% to 14.7% 12.8% to 13.2%
Cost-to-income ratio 29% to 30% 33% to 35%
RoA 5.2% to 5.8% 4% to 4.8%
RoE 21% to 24% 16% to 20%
AUM growth 20% to 25% Retained
Credit cost 3% to 4% Retained

The AUM growth guidance includes 10 to 12 per cent growth in microfinance and more than 30 per cent growth in retail finance. H1FY27 NIM of 14.7 per cent, cost-to-income ratio of 28.7 per cent, RoA of 5.9 per cent and RoE of 23.8 per cent indicate potential moderation in H2FY27 as a roughly 50 bps lending-rate reduction from October 2026 and higher credit costs take effect.

A proposed insurance-commission regulation could reduce RoA by 25 to 30 bps.

Key Risks

  • Higher-than-expected credit costs.
  • Lower-than-expected AUM growth.
