In its September 11, 2026 company update, Motilal Oswal Financial Services reiterated its Buy rating on Grasim Industries. The broker believes resilient viscose staple fibre (VSF) profitability can cushion near-term weakness in chemicals and the paint business.
Grasim's diversified portfolio is expected to support long-term growth, with VSF and chemicals providing core standalone earnings and cash flows. Birla Opus paints and Birla Pivot B2B e-commerce represent the largest incremental growth opportunities.
Motilal Oswal expects VSF margins to remain strong, supported by limited global capacity additions, Chinese producer utilisation of about 92–93% in August 2026 and a decline in Chinese inventories from around 20 days to seven days.
China VSF prices increased about 3% quarter on quarter to RMB14,300 per tonne in Q2 FY27 to date, while pulp prices remained stable at USD950 per tonne. Grasim's VSF EBITDA improved to Rs30 per kg in Q1 FY27 from Rs24.2 per kg in Q4 FY26, and the broker estimates EBITDA of Rs32–33 per kg in Q2 FY27.
Specialty cellulosic fibre volumes grew 27% year on year in Q1 FY27, led by exports. Motilal Oswal believes a greater specialty-fibre mix should improve resilience to commodity cycles and support structurally better margins.
In chemicals, the broker expects lower caustic soda prices to pressure realisations. Average caustic soda prices fell about 17% quarter on quarter to Rs38 per kg in Q2 FY27 to date after increasing about 14% to Rs45 per kg in Q1 FY27.
However, backward integration, rising captive consumption, epoxy-capacity ramp-up, higher chlorine integration and growth in downstream products are expected to support margins over time. Grasim is targeting renewable-energy usage in chemicals of more than 45% in FY27, compared with about 23% in FY26. This should reduce power costs in the energy-intensive chlor-alkali business.
Greater integration is expected to shift the portfolio towards higher-value and more resilient specialty chemicals.
Motilal Oswal highlights Birla Opus's 1,332 MLPA installed capacity, six backward-integrated plants and nationwide manufacturing footprint. The business has expanded to 218 products and more than 1,945 SKUs, supported by over 55,000 dealers, more than 1,450 branded franchise outlets and 150 depots, with a presence in more than 12,100 towns.
Birla Opus gained 90 basis points and 30 basis points of market share in Q4 FY26 and Q1 FY27, respectively, and is ranked third in the organised decorative paints market.
The broker expects strong pricing-led revenue growth in Q2 FY27, but also wider near-term losses due to elevated input costs and advertising and brand-promotion spending. Management has reiterated its target of Rs10,000 crore revenue and EBITDA break-even by FY28E.
Birla Pivot reached its annualised revenue run-rate target of Rs10,000 crore. The B2B platform operates in more than 400 cities through over 5,000 retail touchpoints and offers more than 50,000 SKUs from over 1,000 brands.
The platform has expanded into steel, bitumen, copper, aluminium ingots and polymers. Motilal Oswal views improving repeat orders, transaction growth and more than 50% digitisation in a segment through WhatsApp and self-service channels as evidence of growing platform stickiness.
The broker estimates standalone revenue, EBITDA and adjusted PAT compound annual growth rates (CAGR) of about 15%, 35% and 107%, respectively, over FY26–FY28. It forecasts cumulative operating cash flow of Rs5,440 crore in FY27–FY28, compared with Rs2,660 crore in FY25–FY26.
Standalone net debt is expected to peak in FY27E and decline from FY28E. Net debt to EBITDA is forecast to reduce to 2.0 times in FY28 from 4.1 times in FY26.
| Metric | Forecast / Reference |
|---|---|
| Standalone revenue CAGR | About 15% over FY26–FY28 |

Motilal Oswal's Rs3,800 target price is based on a sum-of-the-parts valuation, including a 35% holding-company discount for listed subsidiary holdings.
