JM Financial Institutional Securities upgraded PB Fintech to BUY in its November 1, 2026 report after a strong Q2FY27 performance and a sharp share-price correction following IRDAI's draft commission-cap consultation paper. The broker views the risk-reward as favourable because the stock had fallen about 47 per cent since the draft was released, while PB Fintech retains market leadership and potential for ecosystem monetisation.
JM Financial reduced its target price to Rs 1,200 from Rs 1,780, even as the recommendation was raised from ADD.
PB Fintech reported strong consolidated financial performance in Q2FY27, with revenue, EBITDA and reported PAT exceeding JM Financial's estimates.
| Metric | Q2FY27 | YoY growth | QoQ growth | Vs JM Financial estimate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Consolidated revenue | Rs 21,777 million | 35 per cent | 15 per cent | 4.3 per cent above estimate |
| Reported PAT, excluding extraordinary items and minority interest | Rs 1,925 million | 43 per cent | 18 per cent | 7.3 per cent above estimate |
| EBITDA | Rs 1,655 million | 69 per cent | 19 per cent | Not stated |
| EBITDA margin | 7.6 per cent | Up about 155 basis points YoY | Not stated | Not stated |
Adjusted EBITDA margin, excluding ESOP charges, was broadly flat at 9.9 per cent. Advertising and promotion spending increased 59 per cent YoY as the GST-driven demand boost faded, limiting margin expansion on an adjusted basis.
Insurance growth remained strong during the quarter. Total insurance premium increased 38 per cent YoY and 12 per cent QoQ to Rs 93,850 million, while online insurance premium rose 38 per cent YoY to Rs 65,430 million.
JM Financial views the growth in renewal and trail revenue as supporting PB Fintech's annuity potential. Paisabazaar online disbursals grew 22 per cent YoY to Rs 27,910 million, although this was 8 per cent below the broker's estimate.
Management expects FY27 insurance premium to exceed Rs 400 billion, led by health and term insurance. It expects reported growth to moderate over the next one to two quarters as the post-GST demand uplift normalises, although the two-year growth rate should remain broadly similar.
Management said it will preserve the customer proposition and growth while aligning marketing and operating costs with revised customer net present value. It expects sharper marketing attribution, lower discretionary expenditure, disciplined hiring and AI-led efficiency to support profitability.
Management expects increased focus on ecosystem offerings such as PB Health, PB Pay and Paisabazaar wealth products.
The key risk is the proposed IRDAI commission framework. The consultation paper proposes the following caps:
| Insurance category | Proposed commission cap |
|---|---|
| First-year retail health | 15 per cent |
| Health renewals and porting | 5 per cent |
| Individual term insurance | 25 per cent |
| New motor third-party business | Nil |
These caps are materially below prevailing take rates, and PoSP payouts would come from the principal's commission. JM Financial incorporates lower blended take rates from FY28E, considers PB Partners economics structurally weak and assumes that the business is discontinued in FY28E.
Consequently, the broker cut its FY28E and FY29E revenue estimates by 55 per cent and 53 per cent, respectively, and reduced its EPS estimates by 55 per cent and 40 per cent. Management supports the regulator's objectives but has not quantified the impact because it is awaiting the final framework.
JM Financial values PB Fintech at 47.5 times September 2028E EBITDA of Rs 10.6 billion. Its valuation implies a discounted enterprise value of Rs 503 billion, net cash of Rs 53.8 billion and market value of Rs 557 billion, resulting in the one-year forward target price of Rs 1,200.
The thesis could strengthen if the final regulations are less restrictive than the draft and cost alignment protects economics. It could weaken if commission caps are implemented as proposed, insurance demand slows more sharply after the GST effect normalises, or cost savings do not offset lower customer economics.
