Investment View and Recommendation

ICICI Securities' October 14, 2026 results update describes Tata Elxsi's Q2FY27 performance as a possible beginning of recovery. The broker upgraded the stock to HOLD from REDUCE after the share price declined around 10 per cent over three months.

The upgrade reflects revenue growth and margins that exceeded ICICI Securities' and consensus expectations, a broad-based recovery, a strong product pipeline and management's outlook for a better H2FY27. However, ICICI Securities remains watchful on whether growth and margin improvement can be sustained amid a volatile macro environment, cautious guidance cuts by major automotive original equipment manufacturers and expected Q3 furloughs.

Q2FY27 Financial Performance

Tata Elxsi reported Q2FY27 revenue growth of 2.3 per cent quarter-on-quarter in US dollar terms, ahead of ICICI Securities' 0.9 per cent estimate and consensus expectations of 0.3 per cent. Revenue grew 3.4 per cent quarter-on-quarter in rupee terms to Rs 10,557 million, while US dollar revenue was US$110 million.

Metric Q2FY27 performance
Revenue growth, US dollar terms 2.3% quarter-on-quarter
Revenue growth, rupee terms 3.4% quarter-on-quarter
Revenue Rs 10,557 million; US$110 million
Reported EBITDA Rs 2,314 million; up 7.1% quarter-on-quarter and 19.7% year-on-year
EBITDA margin 21.9%, up 77 basis points quarter-on-quarter
EBIT margin 19.7%, up 71 basis points quarter-on-quarter
Reported profit after tax Rs 1,703 million; broadly flat quarter-on-quarter and up 10% year-on-year

EBITDA and EBIT margins were above the broker's and consensus estimate of 19 per cent for EBIT. Margin improvement was driven by an 80-basis-point quarter-on-quarter reduction in selling, general and administrative expenses despite the wage-hike impact.

Business Segment and Geographic Trends

The media and communication vertical remained the key growth driver, with recovery continuing as investments began to contribute and large Q1FY27 deals ramped up. Automotive revenue grew 2.4 per cent quarter-on-quarter in US dollar terms, indicating traction after two weaker quarters. Health grew 3.5 per cent, its best performance in 12 quarters, supported by a large deal from a global medtech customer secured in Q1FY27.

The US grew 7.1 per cent quarter-on-quarter, whereas Europe declined 1.3 per cent amid weak automotive demand. Tata Elxsi's top five clients and clients ranked six to 10 grew 1.7 per cent and 0.4 per cent, respectively, in US dollar terms.

Capturing Growth Beyond Large Caps

Mid-cap companies can offer a compelling mix of growth and scalability. DSIJ's Mid Bridge identifies researched mid-cap opportunities with the potential to participate in emerging business trends.

Management Outlook and Operating Indicators

Management expects an improving H2FY27 margin trajectory through higher utilisation, pyramid management, no salary-hike impact in H2FY27 and increased offshoring. Utilisation reached 78 per cent, and Tata Elxsi aims to increase it to 81 to 82 per cent.

  • Management cited traction in aerospace, support from its JSW Motors partnership, quality memorandum of understanding signings and a robust media and communication pipeline.
  • Large Q2FY27 wins included media and communication projects, a global aerospace supplier engagement and a medtech home-dialysis system design project.
  • JLR remains an important growth partner, while most automotive growth came from outside group companies.
  • Headcount fell by 187 quarter-on-quarter, while attrition was flat at 15.9 per cent.

Estimates and Valuation

ICICI Securities increased its FY27E and FY28E revenue estimates by 1.3 per cent and 1.7 per cent, respectively, and its EBITDA estimates by 1.6 per cent and 1.7 per cent. However, it reduced EPS estimates by 0.7 per cent and 1.3 per cent, respectively.

Metric FY27E FY28E
Revenue Rs 42,395 million Rs 46,130 million
EBITDA margin 24.6% 27.7%
Revenue estimate revision Up 1.3% Up 1.7%
EBITDA estimate revision Up 1.6% Up 1.7%
EPS estimate revision Down 0.7% Down 1.3%

The broker rolled its target price to September 2027E and retained a 22x one-year forward P/E multiple, aligned with its target multiple for LTTS. ICICI Securities considers the valuation attractive at about 22x one-year forward P/E, near Tata Elxsi's all-time low valuation range, but awaits sustained operating delivery.
