Investment View and Valuation

Nirmal Bang Institutional Equities' October 13, 2026 report retains a HOLD rating on Tata Elxsi Ltd. with a target price of Rs3,825. The broker expects a sequential recovery in Q2FY27 but remains cautious about the durability of growth, as European automotive demand remains weak and major deal closures are delayed. Transportation contributes more than 55 per cent of the Software Development and Services segment, making a recovery in automotive spending important to the growth outlook.

Q2FY27 Financial Performance

Tata Elxsi reported Q2FY27 revenue of Rs10,557 million, which was 0.6 per cent above Nirmal Bang's estimate and 1.3 per cent above consensus. Revenue increased 2.2 per cent quarter-on-quarter and 7.8 per cent year-on-year in constant currency terms, with growth across industry verticals.

Metric Q2FY27 Sequential change Year-on-year change
Revenue Rs10,557 million 2.2% in constant currency 7.8% in constant currency
EBIT margin 19.7% 72 basis points below estimate 85 basis points above consensus
EBITDA Rs2,314 million 7.1% 19.7%
EBITDA margin 21.9% Up 70 basis points Improved despite annual wage hikes

Margin Recovery and Utilisation

Management attributed 60 to 70 basis points of sequential margin improvement to cross-currency benefits. A further 10 to 20 basis points came from operating leverage and the absence of most prior-quarter one-off costs. Management expects gradual margin improvement through Q3FY27 and Q4FY27 as wage hikes are completed, although it did not provide an FY27 margin target.

Utilisation improved to 78 per cent, and management sees headroom towards the historical level of 81 to 82 per cent. Tata Elxsi also plans to rebalance its employee pyramid over the next six months by moving selected work from senior resources and technical experts to junior employees.

Growth Outlook and Business Developments

Management expects H2FY27 year-on-year revenue growth to be better than H1FY27, supported by deal ramp-ups and opportunities in media and communication and healthcare and life sciences. Transportation rose 2 per cent quarter-on-quarter in constant currency, led by the US and India, while decision-making by European original equipment manufacturers remained slow.

Media and communication grew 3.4 per cent and healthcare and life sciences rose 3.5 per cent quarter-on-quarter. New wins included a GenAI multilingual virtual-assistant engagement, a home-dialysis-system development programme, a multi-year connected-vehicle and cloud telematics engagement, an eVTOL collaboration with Sarla Aviation, and aerospace testing and validation work. Tata Elxsi also made an early-stage investment in KAVIA AI.

Nirmal Bang views the AI initiatives positively for Tata Elxsi's product-engineering positioning, but considers their revenue contribution and pace of monetisation key monitorables.

Revised Estimates

Financial year Revenue forecast EBIT margin Adjusted PAT
FY27E Rs42,322 million 20.0% Rs7,356 million
FY28E Rs45,473 million 22.0% Rs9,070 million
FY29E Rs49,167 million 22.7% Rs9,966 million

Nirmal Bang has revised its estimates downward. Its FY28E EBIT and PAT estimates are below consensus, reflecting caution about growth and margin recovery. The target price remains Rs3,825, based on an unchanged 25 times blended EPS of Rs153.

Key Risks and Monitorables

  • Continued weakness in European automotive demand.
  • Delayed deal closures and ramp-ups.
  • Customer furloughs in Q3FY27.
  • Uncertain monetisation of AI initiatives.
  • Reliance on cross-currency benefits and the reversal of one-off costs for recent margin improvement.
