Rs 1,140 Crore Fresh Order: Railway Stock Jumps 8% After Securing Contract for 2,583 Wagons from Ministry of Railways
The order covers BOXNHL and BOXNS wagon types and adds to Jupiter Wagons’ government-linked freight equipment pipeline. It is meaningful against the company’s consolidated Order Book of Rs 4,675 crore as of March 31, 2026, with the latest award alone equivalent to about one-fourth of that reported backlog.

Railway wagons remain Jupiter Wagons’ largest business line, contributing Rs 2,025.53 crore of standalone revenue in FY26. The company has now secured a Rs 1,140 crore order, including Taxes, from the Ministry of Railways’ Railway Board for the manufacture and supply of 2,583 freight wagons.
The contract comes as Indian Railways expands freight capacity under the National Rail Plan, alongside investments in Dedicated Freight Corridors and PM Gati Shakti. Higher freight movement by rail is expected to support demand for bulk commodity wagons used in sectors such as steel, cement, mining and fertilisers.
Jupiter Wagons said it continues to see healthy demand from private freight operators, wagon leasing companies and core-sector customers. The company expects around Rs 2,000 crore of incremental order inflows in the fourth quarter of FY27. It also highlighted the Ministry of Railways’ new tender for 5,800 BOBRN wagons as a potential source of further sector demand.
The company is pursuing greater component integration across castings, bogies, couplers and brake systems. Its Odisha wheelset facility is targeted for interim commissioning in March 2027 and full commissioning by March 2028. The project is intended to strengthen supply control, although its ramp-up remains an important execution milestone.
Jupiter Wagons’ FY26 financial performance reflected lower wagon volumes and cost pressures. Consolidated total income stood at Rs 2,961 crore and profit after tax was Rs 166 crore, while consolidated operating cash flow was Rs 9.45 crore amid higher inventory and ongoing capital expenditure. The new award improves order visibility, but timely production and working-capital discipline will remain central to its financial conversion.
As of 9:38 am on October 29, 2026, Jupiter Wagons shares were trading at Rs 195.50, compared with a previous close of Rs 181.40. The stock was up 8.16 per cent from the previous close. At Rs 191.50, the share price remained about 45 per cent below its 52-week high of Rs 347.50, while staying above its 52-week low of Rs 173.40.
What This Means for Investors
The award strengthens visibility in Jupiter Wagons’ core rail-wagon franchise and supports a more balanced government and private-sector order pipeline. At Rs 1,140 crore, the contract is material against the Rs 4,675 crore consolidated order book reported at March 31, 2026. The key benefit will depend on converting the order into production without renewed material bottlenecks. Greater backward integration and the Odisha wheelset project could improve delivery control over time.
For investors, the development is supportive of medium-term revenue visibility, particularly if expected fourth-quarter inflows and the BOBRN tender translate into further orders. It does not, however, resolve recent margin and cash-conversion pressure. Consolidated operating cash flow was Rs 9.45 crore in FY26 amid higher inventory and capital spending. At 46.52 times trailing 12-month earnings, the valuation continues to place weight on timely execution, profitability recovery and disciplined working-capital management.
