Apple’s Secret Weapon Unleashed! Apple Pay Steps Into India’s Booming Payments Market
Apple’s digital wallet enters India with Axis Bank credit card support, bringing contactless payments to iPhone users while entering a market dominated by UPI.
✨ Key Takeaways
Apple has officially launched its digital payments service Apple Pay in India, bringing the platform to one of the world’s fastest-growing digital payment markets after years of global expansion. The service has initially gone live with Axis Bank as the first banking partner, allowing eligible Axis Bank credit card holders to make contactless payments through Apple devices.
The India launch comes after Apple Pay’s global rollout began in 2014, when Apple introduced the service in the US. Over the years, the platform expanded across several international markets, becoming a widely used digital wallet for contactless card payments. However, India remained one of the major markets where the service was unavailable due to regulatory requirements, payment ecosystem differences and the rapid rise of UPI-based payments.

Axis Bank has become the first Indian bank to support Apple Pay, with the service initially available for Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards. The bank had around 16.3 million credit cards outstanding as of August 2026, making it one of the largest credit card issuers in India.
Users can add eligible cards through the Apple Wallet app or Axis Bank’s mobile application and use Apple Pay on compatible iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad devices. Payments can be made at supported merchant terminals, within applications and online platforms using Apple’s secure authentication system.
At launch, Apple Pay does not support RuPay cards or UPI payments, which means its initial reach will be limited compared with India’s existing digital payment platforms. The company is expected to focus on expanding banking partnerships and merchant acceptance as adoption increases. Apple has reportedly held discussions with other major banks, including HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, for future expansion.
How Apple Pay Works In India
Apple Pay uses near-field communication (NFC) technology to enable tap-and-pay transactions. Instead of sharing actual card details with merchants, the service uses tokenised card information stored securely on the device. Transactions are authenticated through Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode, reducing the need to manually enter card details during payments.
Unlike UPI-based payment applications such as Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm, Apple Pay is primarily a card-based payment solution. Users cannot currently make person-to-person transfers, scan QR codes or directly access UPI payments through the service.
Apple Enters A UPI-Dominated Market
Apple Pay’s entry comes at a time when India’s digital payment ecosystem is already highly developed. UPI has become the dominant mode of digital transactions in the country, accounting for around 84 per cent of digital payment volumes, according to an IMF report cited by Reuters.
This makes India different from many global markets where Apple Pay gained popularity by replacing cash and traditional card payments. In India, Apple Pay will compete in a market where consumers are already accustomed to instant bank transfers, QR-based payments and low-cost digital transactions.
However, the growing use of premium smartphones, increasing credit card adoption and rising preference for contactless payments provide a potential opportunity for Apple Pay. The service could appeal particularly to iPhone users who prefer an integrated payment experience within the Apple ecosystem.
What It Means For Apple And Axis Bank
For Apple, the India launch strengthens its services ecosystem in one of its key global markets. India has become an important market for Apple’s hardware business, and adding payments could increase engagement among its user base.
For Axis Bank, the partnership provides an opportunity to strengthen its position among premium banking customers and increase card usage through Apple devices. The bank’s early partnership gives it a first-mover advantage among Indian financial institutions supporting Apple Pay.
The success of Apple Pay in India will depend on how quickly Apple expands bank partnerships, adds more card networks, improves merchant acceptance and adapts to India’s unique payment preferences. While the service enters a highly competitive digital payments landscape, its focus on security, privacy and seamless device integration could help it build a niche among Apple user
