BEML’s Green Mining Power Play! Massive Electric Dump Truck Unveiled

BEML has launched the BH60-EV electric dump truck for high-capacity mining and infrastructure work, extending its mining-equipment electrification programme after introducing a 35-ton model earlier this year.

✨ Key Takeaways

BEML Limited has unveiled the BH60-EV, which it describes as India’s first indigenously designed and developed 60-ton electric dump truck, marking a further step in its push to electrify heavy mining and infrastructure equipment.

The vehicle was launched virtually on September 30, 2026, by Chairman and Managing Director Shantanu Roy at the company’s Mysuru Complex, where it was designed and developed. The BH60-EV follows BEML’s launch of a 35-ton electric dump truck on April 10, 2026, indicating that the company is building a broader electric-equipment range rather than treating the earlier model as a standalone product.

The new truck is aimed at high-capacity material handling in mines and infrastructure sites, where payload, gradeability and operating uptime are key purchase considerations. It has a payload capacity of 54,500 kg with a rock body and a volumetric body capacity of 36.4 cubic metres.

BEML said the vehicle uses a permanent magnet synchronous motor, rugged gearbox and a 1,000 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack. The electric configuration is intended to provide instant torque and high tractive effort on gradients, while removing tailpipe emissions during operation.

The company estimates that the BH60-EV could lower operating costs by 40 to 60 per cent compared with conventional diesel-powered equipment, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by around 130 tonnes annually per vehicle, depending on operating conditions. These estimates will ultimately depend on fleet utilisation, electricity tariffs, battery performance, route conditions and the energy mix used for charging.

The commercial proposition is therefore not limited to the truck itself. BEML said it will provide charging-station solutions compatible with a customer’s site electrical infrastructure and scalable for fleet operations. For mining users, the availability of reliable on-site charging and adequate power capacity will be central to converting the product’s stated fuel and maintenance savings into actual operating-cost benefits.

The BH60-EV also includes a rollover protective structure cabin, emergency steering and sealed oil-cooled disc brakes. Such features are relevant for mining operators because equipment must function in demanding terrain and under high-load conditions, where safety and reliability influence lifecycle economics alongside acquisition costs.

The launch is aligned with BEML’s wider product-development investment. Its FY26 investor presentation had listed 60-ton and 100-ton EV dump trucks among products under development, while also highlighting a 35-ton electric dump truck as a product developed during the year. The company spent Rs 251 crore on research and development in FY26, up from Rs 101 crore in FY25, alongside higher capital expenditure for manufacturing and rail expansion.

Mining and Construction remained BEML’s largest business group in FY26, contributing Rs 1,789 crore, or 41 per cent, of revenue from operations of Rs 4,351 crore. However, the revenue mix has been shifting towards Defence and Aerospace, and Rail and Metro. The BH60-EV gives BEML an opportunity to retain relevance in mining equipment as customers assess cleaner alternatives to diesel fleets.

The financial backdrop remains mixed. BEML’s FY26 revenue rose 8.2 per cent from the previous year, but profit after Tax declined to Rs 141.36 crore from Rs 292.52 crore. In the June 2026 quarter, net sales rose 29.3 per cent year-on-year to Rs 819.62 crore, while the company reported a net loss of Rs 27.01 crore, although this was narrower than the loss reported in the corresponding quarter a year earlier.

As of 10.35 am on October 1, 2026, BEML shares were trading at Rs 1,980.10, down 0.59 per cent from the previous close. The stock was about 11.5 per cent below its 52-week high of Rs 2,237.08 and had declined 8.54 per cent over the preceding year, compared with a 3.22 per cent decline in the BSE 500.

BEML has not disclosed customer orders, pricing, production plans or delivery schedules for the BH60-EV. Its commercial traction will depend on mine operators’ willingness to invest in charging infrastructure and deploy electric equipment in high-duty operating environments.
