✨ Key Takeaways

Market Update at 04:00 PM: Indian benchmark equity indices, the Sensex and Nifty 50, reversed their early gains on Monday, October 12, as persistent foreign portfolio investor (FPI) selling, elevated U.S. bond yields and weakness in heavyweight stocks weighed on market sentiment.

Indian equity markets opened higher, supported by easing crude oil prices in early trade and the rupee's recovery following fresh measures announced by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). However, the initial optimism faded as selling pressure emerged in IT, FMCG and banking stocks. The Sensex surrendered more than 900 points from its Intraday high, while the Nifty 50 slipped below the 22,400 mark.

At the closing bell, the Nifty 50 declined 157.10 points, or 0.7 per cent, to 22,363.35. The Sensex dropped 547.65 points, or 0.76 per cent, to 71,924.68. The weakness followed Friday's recovery, when the Nifty 50 gained 1.30 per cent and snapped its eight-week losing streak.

Foreign investment outflows continued to remain a concern for domestic equities. FPIs withdrew approximately Rs 44,166 crore from Indian equities during October through October 9, taking cumulative calendar year 2026 withdrawals to around Rs 3.04 lakh crore.

Elevated U.S. bond yields and global uncertainty have contributed to the selling pressure, while continued foreign capital withdrawals have restricted the sustainability of market recoveries.

The RBI introduced fresh measures over the weekend to ease pressure on the Indian rupee. From October 12, the central bank began providing USD directly to three public sector oil marketing companies, Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, through designated banks. The arrangement aims to reduce dollar demand in the spot foreign exchange market.

The rupee strengthened nearly 1 per cent to approximately Rs 95.76 against the USD at the close, compared with Friday's closing level of Rs 96.73. However, the currency's recovery was insufficient to sustain early gains in equities.

Brent crude surged approximately 0.65 per cent to trade near USD 105 per barrel, remaining above USD 100 amid continuing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. High oil prices remain a concern for India because the country depends on imports for nearly 90 per cent of its crude oil requirements.

Elevated U.S. Treasury yields added another challenge by increasing the attractiveness of dollar-denominated investments, putting further pressure on emerging markets such as India.

Unlike the benchmark indices, broader markets showed pockets of strength during the session. At the close, the Small-Cap index advanced approximately 1.42 per cent, while the Mid-Cap index gained around 0.08 per cent, indicating relative resilience outside the frontline stocks.

Sectoral performance remained mixed, with IT, FMCG and banking shares witnessing selling pressure. The Nifty FMCG index declined around 1.67 per cent during morning trading, reversing part of Friday's gains. Automobile, media and realty stocks, on the other hand, displayed relative strength during the session.

Among individual stocks, Tech Mahindra declined nearly 2.85 per cent amid weakness in IT stocks ahead of its Q2FY27 earnings. Avenue Supermarts, which operates DMart, fell approximately 4.32 per cent as concerns surrounding operating margins weighed on sentiment. Poonawalla Fincorp gained approximately 0.29 per cent, supported by strong quarterly asset growth.

Among the key contributors supporting the Nifty 50, Bajaj Auto added 5.93 points, Bharat Electronics contributed 4.51 points and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories added 4.30 points.

On the other hand, ICICI Bank exerted the largest drag, reducing the index by 23.53 points. Larsen & Toubro weighed on the index by 19.39 points, while Bharti Airtel dragged it down by 17.99 points.

As of October 12, 2026, market breadth remained largely balanced, with a marginal bias towards declining stocks. Out of 3,706 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,795 advanced, 1,798 declined and 113 remained unchanged.

A total of 76 stocks touched their 52-week highs, while 140 stocks hit their 52-week lows. Additionally, 124 stocks hit their Upper Circuit limits, whereas 104 stocks hit their Lower Circuit limits during the session.

Pre-Market Update at 7:40 AM: GIFT Nifty indicated a positive opening for domestic equities, trading at 22,645 at 6:58 AM IST on October 12. The indicator was 124.55 points, or 0.55 per cent, above the previous Nifty 50 close of 22,520.45.

The positive opening indication follows a strong domestic session on October 9, when the Nifty 50 gained 1.30 per cent and the Sensex advanced 1.23 per cent. Overseas markets ended broadly higher, while crude oil prices eased. However, persistent foreign selling, the rupee's record-low level and the release of September consumer price index (CPI) inflation data remain important factors for market participants.

India's September CPI inflation data is scheduled for release at 5:30 PM IST on October 12. The reading will be monitored for its implications for Reserve Bank of India (RBI) policy expectations following the central bank's calibrated-tightening stance. Banks, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), Real Estate, automobiles and other interest-rate-sensitive segments could remain in focus as inflation data may influence expectations for funding costs and monetary conditions.

The RBI will conduct an open-market sale (OMO) auction of government securities worth Rs 25,000 crore on October 13. The auction will cover six securities maturing between 2030 and 2034. The sale is intended to absorb liquidity from the banking system and may influence money-market conditions, bond yields and funding-cost expectations. Financial stocks and other rate-sensitive sectors could be monitored for potential reactions.

Foreign institutional investors sold more than Rs 30,000 crore of Indian equities on a net basis during the week ended October 9, taking October's net selling close to Rs 40,000 crore, according to the reported market data. The rupee ended the week at a record low of Rs 96.78 against the U.S. dollar. Sustained overseas outflows, currency weakness and elevated U.S. Treasury yields could weigh on risk appetite and increase concerns about imported inflation, particularly for import-intensive businesses.

The Q2 earnings season gains momentum on October 12, with HCL Technologies and RBL Bank scheduled to announce their Quarterly Results. HCL Technologies' financial performance and management commentary will be important for the IT services sector, while RBL Bank's asset quality and margins will be monitored for cues on private-sector banking.

Primary-market activity is also set to pick up, with Zetwerk Manufacturing Business scheduled to announce the price band for its proposed initial public offering (IPO). The issue includes a fresh issue of Rs 2,830 crore and an offer for sale of up to 14.45 crore shares. The IPO is scheduled to open on October 15.

The moderation in crude prices offers some relief to India as a major oil importer, although Brent remains above USD 100 per barrel. Oil prices will remain relevant for imported inflation, fuel costs and the performance of oil-sensitive sectors.

Gold rose 0.33 per cent to USD 4,208.08, while silver gained 0.74 per cent to USD 61.23. The U.S. Dollar Index eased 0.10 per cent to 102.114. The rupee traded at Rs 96.78 against the U.S. dollar, unchanged in the latest available data. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.237 per cent, also unchanged. Currency movements and elevated global yields remain important factors for foreign portfolio flows and equity valuations.

In the latest available institutional flow data for October 9, foreign institutional investors and foreign portfolio investors were net sellers of Rs 3,568.90 crore. Domestic institutional investors were net buyers of Rs 4,743.26 crore. Domestic buying exceeded foreign selling during the session, although overseas outflows remain a key market variable following substantial net sales during the week ended October 9.

In the previous session on October 9, the Nifty 50 closed at 22,520.45, gaining 288.65 points, or 1.30 per cent. The index traded between an intraday low of 22,294.75 and a high of 22,580.75. India VIX declined 5.96 per cent to 14.37, indicating easing expectations of near-term volatility. However, the movement in India VIX alone does not indicate the likely direction of the market.

Among stocks to watch, Avenue Supermarts reported an 8.5 per cent year-on-year increase in consolidated Q2FY27 net profit to Rs 742.98 crore. Revenue rose 17.8 per cent, while total income increased 17.7 per cent to Rs 19,657.54 crore. Total expenses rose 18.3 per cent to Rs 18,632.70 crore. The results provide an update on organised retail growth and operating-cost trends.

Adani Green Energy reported a 24 per cent year-on-year increase in operational capacity to 20,763 MW during the first half of FY27. Energy sales rose 32 per cent to 25,747 million units. The company added 4,083 MW of greenfield capacity during the half year, including 621 MW in the second quarter. It also operationalised 3,081 MWh of battery-storage capacity at Khavda during the quarter. The operational update precedes its Q2 results scheduled for October 21.

NTPC has invited expressions of interest from commercial and industrial entities willing to invest a 26 per cent equity stake in co-generation projects. These projects are intended to supply steam and electricity to industrial users through a framework combining coal, renewable energy and battery-energy-storage systems. The development expands NTPC's proposed energy-solutions model beyond conventional electricity supply arrangements.

63 Moons Technologies will also remain in focus after a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court directed the Enforcement Directorate to monetise attached properties in the NSEL payment-default matter and distribute Rs 1,950 crore to the company once the amount is realised. The potential recovery remains subject to asset monetisation and the settlement trigger event under the approved scheme.

Domestic markets enter Monday's session with a positive opening indication, supported by gains in global equities and the previous session's recovery. However, investors will monitor September CPI inflation, institutional flows, the RBI's upcoming OMO sale, crude oil prices, currency movements and corporate earnings for further direction.
