Hindustan Copper Mining Expansion Plan

Hindustan Copper is a Miniratna Category-I CPSE established in 1967 and is a vertically integrated copper producer with operations spanning mining, ore beneficiation, SMElting, refining and copper rod production. The company stated that it owns all the operating mining leases of copper ore in India and has access to around 45 per cent of India's copper ore reserves and resources. Its total reserves and resources stood at 767.37 million tonnes, while mining capacity is planned to increase from around 4 MTPA to 12.20 MTPA under the expansion programme.

The company has outlined an expansion strategy focused on underground mine expansion, installation and commissioning of new paste-fill and concentrator plants, and extensive exploration. Under the roadmap, the Malanjkhand Copper Project is planned to increase from 2.5 MTPA to 5 MTPA, while the Khetri Copper Complex is targeted to expand from 1.5 MTPA to 3 MTPA. The Indian Copper Complex is planned to increase from 0.4 MTPA to 4.2 MTPA by FY30.

Over Rs 7,000 Crore Strategic Investment Plan

Hindustan Copper has planned capital investment of over Rs 7,000 crore over the next five to six years as part of its strategic initiatives in copper and critical minerals. The company is also pursuing new copper deposits in India and overseas, while focusing on reopening closed mines across the country.

The company has added 135.52 million tonnes of copper ore reserves and resources over the last three years and is pursuing additional resource acquisition. It also has a partnership with CODELCO, Chile, focused on capacity building, knowledge sharing and expertise in mining, beneficiation and exploration.

Copper Reserves and Resources

According to the updated presentation, India's total copper ore reserves and resources stand at 1,660 million tonnes, while India's copper ore reserves are 164 million tonnes. Hindustan Copper holds 156.97 million tonnes of copper ore reserves with an average grade of 1.31 per cent. Its overall reserves and resources stand at 767.37 million tonnes with an average grade of 0.94 per cent under the UNFC system as of April 1, 2025.

The company has also highlighted continued exploration across areas including the Sidheswar Block, Kendadih Southern Block, Rakha N-W Block, Khetri and Kolihan leases, with geophysical exploration planned at the Kolihan mining lease to establish the presence of copper ore at greater depths.

Financial Performance

The company's presentation reported revenue from operations of Rs 3,077.92 crore in FY25-26, compared with Rs 2,070.97 crore in FY24-25. Profit before Tax increased to Rs 1,232.73 crore in FY25-26, compared with Rs 633.51 crore in the previous financial year. The presentation also reported Rs 936.50 crore of revenue from operations and Rs 471.77 crore of PBT for Q1 FY26-27.

The company has also reduced its loan position over recent years, with the presentation showing the loan trend declining from Rs 222.46 crore in March 2024 to Rs 109.91 crore in March 2026 and Rs 89.86 crore in July 2026.

Copper Demand Growth

Hindustan Copper highlighted the growth potential for copper consumption, particularly from AI infrastructure, renewable energy, electric vehicles and urbanisation. In India, refined copper consumption is led by building Construction at 24 per cent, infrastructure at 19 per cent, industrial applications at 17 per cent, transportation at 11 per cent, consumer durables at 12 per cent and diverse applications at 17 per cent.

The company also highlighted government initiatives including Make in India, smart cities, metro and Railway projects, Aatmanirbhar Bharat in Defence, the 500 GW renewable energy target by 2032, PLI schemes, electric vehicle adoption and highway development as factors supporting copper-consuming industries.

Hindustan Copper Share Price

Hindustan Copper shares were trading at Rs 566.35, down 1.10 per cent, compared with a 0.55 per cent decline in the Nifty 50 to 24,154.90. The stock therefore traded weaker than the broader benchmark during the session.

The updated corporate presentation provides a detailed roadmap for the company's mining expansion, including a planned increase in capacity to 12.20 MTPA, over Rs 7,000 crore of planned capital investment, additional exploration and expansion of its major mining projects.
