The Nifty 50 eventually closed at 24,471.70, down 112.10 points or 0.46 per cent. The Sensex also ended in the red, falling 388.19 points or 0.49 per cent to 78,154.25.

Weakness in heavyweight financial stocks and elevated crude oil prices kept sentiment under pressure. Gains in IT stocks, strong quarterly earnings and renewed foreign buying provided some support but were not enough to reverse the broader decline.
