Mahanadi Coalfields IPO Could Unlock Subsidiary Value
Coal India has initiated plans to divest a 10 per cent stake in Mahanadi Coalfields through an initial public offering.
The proposed IPO will involve an offer for sale of up to 66.18 crore shares, meaning Mahanadi Coalfields will not issue fresh equity shares and will not receive any proceeds from the issue. The transaction will allow Coal India to monetise part of its holding while providing investors with direct exposure to one of its largest subsidiaries.
Mahanadi Coalfields is among Coal India's key operating subsidiaries and contributed significantly to the company's overall production. The subsidiary accounted for around 21 per cent of India's domestic coal production and 28.4 per cent of Coal India's total coal production in FY26.
For the financial year ended March 2026, Mahanadi Coalfields reported a net profit of Rs 10,678 crore, although profit declined 1.3 per cent YoY. Revenue during the year stood at Rs 30,550 crore, registering a decline of 2.6 per cent compared with the previous year.
Coal India Continues Subsidiary Monetisation Strategy
The Mahanadi Coalfields IPO is part of Coal India's broader strategy to reduce its stake in subsidiaries and unlock value from its business portfolio. The company has earlier indicated plans to divest up to 25 per cent stake in subsidiaries, including Mahanadi Coalfields and South Eastern Coalfields, through IPOs or other suitable routes.
Coal India has already taken steps towards listing its subsidiaries, including Bharat Coking Coal and Central Mine Planning & Design Institute during the current year.
The listing of key subsidiaries is expected to provide greater visibility into the individual valuations of Coal India's businesses.
Coal Demand Recovery Supports Sentiment
Apart from the IPO development, improving operational trends in the coal sector have also supported sentiment around Coal India. The company's August operational update showed that coal offtake increased 6 per cent YoY, supported by demand from the power sector. However, the growth in coal offtake remained below the 13 per cent rise in power demand during the period.
Coal production declined 6 per cent YoY in August and was down 5 per cent during the first five months of FY27. The lower production levels helped reduce pithead inventories by 55 million tonnes. The decline in inventory levels, combined with stronger demand for thermal coal, has also improved pricing conditions in the e-auction market.
Coal India allocated 82.76 lakh tonnes through e-auctions until August, with the volumes attracting a premium of 59 per cent over notified prices.
Why Coal India Shares Gained Despite Market Weakness?
Coal India's rally reflects investor optimism around two key factors: potential value unlocking through subsidiary listings and improving demand conditions in the coal market. The proposed Mahanadi Coalfields IPO could help highlight the value of individual businesses within Coal India's portfolio, while operational improvement, lower inventories and stronger e-auction premiums provide additional support to the company's earnings outlook.
With broader markets witnessing selling pressure, Coal India's performance stood out as investors focused on companies benefiting from domestic demand trends and strategic value creation initiatives.
